Subir al Sur

Viajar, conocer nuevas culturas, relacionarse con personas de otros países y realizar un voluntariado. Todo eso es posible a través de Subir al Sur, una ONG que promueve la participación juvenil voluntaria y la educación intercultural a través de proyectos solidarios en todo el mundo.
Cuando las relaciones entre Francia y Alemania se vieron afectadas al finalizar la I Guerra Mundial, los países decidieron reconstruir puentes de diálogo y acción cooperativa entre los pueblos que habían resultado devastados a causa del conflicto. Allí es cuando se da inicio al voluntariado intercultural, un servicio pedagógico de acción- reflexión desarrollado en distintos países del mundo para promover la paz. Hoy, esta línea de voluntariado se convirtió en una oportunidad para que personas de diferentes culturas se desempeñen en forma conjunta en un proyecto solidario y aprendan unos de otros.

“Trabajé durante 20 días en una organización no gubernamental francesa Solidarités Jeunesses en la región de PACA. Originalmente en ese lugar existía una comunidad donde la mayoría de los hombres murió a causa de la II Guerra Mundial. Allí el invierno es muy crudo y las mujeres que frente a esas circunstancias se quedaron solas, debieron realizar el trabajo duro que efectuaban sus maridos. Ante la imposibilidad de sostener la situación, abandonaron el lugar, que años después fue comprado por La Village des Jeunes (miembros de Solidarités Jeunesses) para realizar proyectos de servicio voluntario y promover la integración y la construcción de la paz”, cuenta Solange Estévez, integrante de la Comisión Directiva de Subir al Sur, una organización no gubernamental que promueve la educación intercultural y para la paz, a través de la facilitación de encuentros solidarios entre personas de diferentes regiones del mundo.

La joven explica que cuando arribó al lugar, se encontró con voluntarios de todas las nacionalidades: franceses, alemanes, ingleses, mexicanos, italianos, belgas, estadounidenses, japoneses y chinos. “Se nos convocó para realizar un trabajo ecológico, tuvimos que limpiar un río que se había desbordado a causa de las intensas lluvias del año anterior”, relata Solange, quien acompaña a la organización desde su fundación en 2005. El río, en vez de pasar a un costado de la ciudad, la atravesaba. Entonces, recuerda, se decidió dividir el trabajo en tres grupos: el primero trabajaba técnicamente para evitar el desborde; el segundo, ayudaba a correr piedras y troncos; y el tercero, hacía una labor de concientización acerca de la utilización racional del agua.

Ella sostiene que la idea principal de los encuentros interculturales es “empaparse” a través de la experiencia que dejan distintas iniciativas a nivel mundial, para luego ser aplicadas en los distintos países. Pero además del trabajo comunitario realizado, Solange subraya la importancia de los lazos que se generan con personas de otros lugares, adquiriendo habilidades comunicativas más allá de la palabra.

Subir al Sur es una organización que surge con el objetivo de que los jóvenes o cualquier persona sin necesidad de estudios y de tener un profesión puedan tener una experiencia en relación a un voluntariado, conozcan otros lugares y a otras personas, y promuevan valores como la paz, la no violencia, la justicia, la cooperación y el entendimiento en la diversidad. Para ello, la organización cuenta con proyectos solidarios de corto y largo plazo, en el que participan grupos juveniles, ONGs locales de la Argentina y de todo el mundo. Los programas de corta duración, es decir los encuentros interculturales de cooperación, tienen una vigencia aproximada de 15 días; mientras que los de mediana y larga duración, de un mes a un año.

En el país se trabaja además en Subir al Mundo, una iniciativa que apunta específicamente a jóvenes argentinos para que desarrollen una experiencia de voluntariado en el exterior. Las actividades solidarias varían según el proceso de desarrollo local que apoya cada proyecto de voluntariado intercultural: por ejemplo, en algunos casos la tarea estará vinculada a acciones sociales, artísticas u ecológicas, entre tantas otras. “Se establecen objetivos específicos, luego se conforma el proyecto y finalmente se convoca a voluntarios de todo el mundo, porque la idea es que siempre se conformen equipos con personas locales e internacionales”, explica la integrante de la organización los pasos del proceso de conformación de los programas.

Durante los encuentros de corta duración, la mayoría de las veces los voluntarios tienen cubierto alojamiento y comida. El alojamiento ocurre en centros comunitarios, casas alquiladas o instituciones sobre la cual se realiza el proyecto; y la comida se organiza en equipos formados por el grupo de voluntarios. En Europa y unos países de Asia por ejemplo, en general no es necesario pagar ninguna contribución a la organización socia local para contar con ambos servicios. A través de la política de juventud de los países en donde se desarrolla la actividad, se financian los proyectos. Entonces, los voluntarios que realizan este tipo de experiencia sólo deben pagar el costo de su pasaje hasta llegar al lugar de encuentro.

En países de África y América no sucede lo mismo. Allí se solicita, en general una contribución que sirve para financiar alojamiento y comida, además de materiales, transporte y gastos administrativos, entre otros. El costo puede variar entre los USD 150 y USD 350 para todo el proyecto. La realización o no de contribuciones dependerá de la situación económica del país, de las políticas de juventud y del nivel de desarrollo que exista.

Lo más importante de los encuentros interculturales es que disminuyen los niveles de prejuicio, “de cómo es aquel otro”, dice la joven integrante de Subir al Sur. “Todos los chicos duermen en un mismo establecimiento, comparten situaciones comunes, una labor y cronogramas de trabajo; y además tienen tiempo libre para adquirir conocimiento sobre la historia y situación cultural y social de la región en la que se está trabajando”, agrega.

Subir al Sur es una organización que articula voluntarios de distintos lugares del planeta interesados en participar de un proyecto social, cultural o ecológico, entre otros, y organizaciones que deseen llevar a cabo iniciativas según las necesidades específicas que se generen en su lugar. Así, en 2010, 21 voluntarios internacionales se sumaron a cinco proyectos en el país de medio y largo plazo; ocho en un encuentro intercultural y once voluntarios argentinos participaron en proyectos en India, Reino Unido, Francia y Catalunya para promover la paz y el desarrollo.
Jóvenes del mundo

Algunos colaboraron en la construcción de un tanque de agua en una comunidad nepalí; otros participaron de un proyecto de mantenimiento de un castillo en un suburbio alemán junto a jóvenes europeos y asiáticos; y otros trabajaron en la realización de actividades recreativas en un centro de refugiados de Holanda. Estas son solo algunas de las actividades que realizaron aquellos jóvenes que decidieron formar parte de un proyecto comunitario y acercarse a otros no sólo para conocer acerca de sus necesidades y culturas, sino además para promover su propio autoconocimiento como personas.

Desde la organización argumentan que formar parte de un proyecto comunitario genera y asienta valores a través del respeto de las culturas que se encuentran en convivencia, fomenta la responsabilidad grupal e individual para el logro de los objetivos del proyecto y promueve la solidaridad más allá de las fronteras. También, mencionan que durante los programas los chicos se dan cuenta que otras formas de comunicación son posible y que se generan lazos de acción y conocimiento en temáticas como democracia, exclusión social y económica, medio ambiente, entre otros.

“Es un viaje transformador para tu vida y para tu visión del mundo”, afirma Solange. Ella sabe que desde su origen, Subir al Sur tiene que ver con cambiar la mirada, con moverse, con ir hacia ese otro lugar donde cambiar el punto desde donde uno se apoya y se sostiene. “Tal vez ir a otro lado te hace dar cuenta que existen otras formas de pensar, vivir y sentir, que todo puede ser distinto”.

En la obra llamada " la Mayonelle" estando en uno de mis primeros días como voluntario, me encontré trabajando como mason, junto con otros voluntarios y la gente de insercion laboral. Comenzada la mañana yo debia terminar un estanque y sacar los yuyos que crecian alrededor junto con Terry un gentilhombre de unos cincuenta y pico de años. Comenzamos a trabajar juntos y el empezó a relatarme la historia de francia, desde la época de Luis XIV, hasta nuestros días. Eso despertó mucho interés en mi, y no dejaba de hacerle preguntas; las que eran respondidas con lujo y detalles. La verdad que fue una experiencia increíble, porque ni en una cátedra de facultad, yo hubiese podido tener tanta información y conocimiento juntos, al mismo tiempo que nos encontrabamos como todos, de manera muy activa. Margot, otra voluntaria, excelente persona y amiga, agregó características de la reina que llevó su nombre. En medio de risas y juego de identificaciónes, llevamos a cabo nuestra tarea del día.
Así fue como comencé a adaptarme y sentirme parte de esa historia que estaba viviendo.
Previo a ello, yo habia arribado al aeropuerto de Toulouse, despues de muchas horas de viaje. Era sorprendente que ellos entendían mi frances, pero no yo el de ellos. tras averiguar que transporte me dejaba en la estación de tren y luego que tren me llevaría a mi destino, logré dificultosamente arribar a la pequeña ciudad del sureste de francia.

In the workcamp called " la Mayonelle" being one of my first days as a volunteer i found myself working as a mason, together with other volunteers and people on work insertion. Starting the morning I had to finish a water basin and take out the weeds which were growing around it. Together with Terry a gentleman of around 50 years of age, we started working together and he started to tell me the history of France, from the time of Luis XIV, until today. This woke a lot of interest in me, and I couldn’t stop asking him questions, which he replied to with great detail. The truth of the matter is that it was an incredible experience, because not even in a university course could I have had such information and knowledge together, at the same time as we found ourselves as other in an active manner. Margot, another volunteer, excellent person and friend, added characteristics of the queen which had held the same name as herself. In the middle of laughter and identifications, we did our daily task.
This is how I began to adapt myself and to feel part of this history which I was living. Before this , I had arrived to the airport of Toulouse after many hours of travel. I was surprising for me that they could understand my French but I could not understand them. After seeing what transport to take to get to the train station and then onto my destination, i managed the difficult quest of arriving to the small village in the south east of France.

The Subir al sur team let for its biannual meeting last weekend in the Capital City of Buenos Aires in order to share information about the advances in 2011 and to prepare projects for 2012. Between drawings and mates we communicated the actions undertaken, the necessities and the advances in Subir al Sur.
We will share more information about 2012 shortly. For now we have the Mid and Long term volunteering brochure available for those who wish to take part in an enriching LOCAL project in Argentina with our partners in the North of the country, and we also have the short, middle and long term projects available on an INTERNATIONAL level for all who would like to request the list. Subir al Sur formo parte del equipo de preparación para el ultimo seminario de Volunteering 2011 que fue organizado por CCSVI (comité de coordinación de servicio voluntariado internacional) y IBG en Ernsthofen Alemania. Eso fue la culminación de un proyecto que duro un año con el objetivo de crear el papel blanco sobre Servicio Voluntario Internacional (SVI,) en donde hasta 80 organizaciones de SVI de 4 continentes participaron en las distintas actividades. En el último año se organizó un congreso internacional, seminarios intrarregionales y encuentros interculturales internacionales. En este último seminario en Alemania miembros de organizaciones de SVI y voluntarios quienes participaron en los distintos proyectos trabajaron con la información recolectada durante todo el año y empezaron la tarea impresionante de armar el papel blanco. Una vez aprobada por los organizaciones de SVI miembros y socios de CCSVI el papel blanco se usara para representar que es SVI y su visión por los próximas 10 años sobre los áreas temáticas en común; Pobreza y Salud, Patrimonio y Diversidad, Participación Activa e Inclusión Social, Derechos Humanos y Paz, Sustentabilidad y Medio Ambiente; incluyendo los herramientas de apoyo para su implementación y el visión desde el perspectiva intrarregional e interregional.

Subir al Sur was present as part of the preparation team for the final seminar of Volunteering 2011 organised by CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service) and IBG in Ernsthofen Germany. This was the culmination of a year- long project with the objective of creating the White Paper for International Voluntary Service (IVS) in which as many as 80 International Voluntary Service organisations from 4 continents participated in different activities. In the last year there have been an international congress, interregional seminars and international workcamps. In this last seminar in Germany members of IVS organisations and volunteers who had participated on the different projects during the year worked on the information collected and started the impressive task of creating the white paper. Once the paper has been approved by all IVS organisations members and partners of CCIVS the work will begin to use this paper to represent what is International Voluntary Service and its vision for the next 10 years on the common themes of; Poverty and Heath, Cultural Heritage and Diversity, Active Participation and Social Inclusion, Peace and Human Rights and Environment and Sustainability; including the support measures to achieve this and the vision from the intraregional and interregional perspective.

Subir al Sur junto a la Comunidad Tamandua

Desde el sábado 8 al viernes 14 de octubre se llevo adelante el proyecto junto a la Comunidad Tamandua Guaraní Mbya de Misiones, el mismo conto con el apoyo de Fundación desde América y la muy buena predisposición de la gente de la comunidad. El encuentro Intercultural tuvo como eje el reconocimiento de la diversidad, el intercambio y el trabajo voluntario y cooperativo.
El mismo se desarrollo con la participación de jóvenes estudiantes provenientes de Estados Unidos (un grupo organizado por New York University Buenos Aires), niños, adolescentes y adultos de la comunidad Tamandua, con facilitadores de Subir al Sur, proviniendo Buenos Aires e integrantes del pueblo Tamandua.

Durante el transcurso del proyecto tuvieron lugar las siguientes actividades: reacondicionamiento mediante tareas de pintura del Centro Comunitario dibujando luego en una de sus paredes internas un característico mural que representa el aspecto espiritual y cordial de la comunidad; también se participo de distintos talleres y charlas que tuvieron como eje la reflexión acerca de la diversidad cultural, la historia de lucha y resistencia e identidad del pueblo guaraní y de la comunidad Tamandua mas específicamente. Otra de las actividades fue visitar la escuela de la comunidad, donde voluntarios y alumnos practicaron recíprocamente un fluido y rico intercambio. Asimismo no faltaron los momentos recreativos y de juegos junto a los niños y jóvenes de de Tamandua.

Este encuentro pluricultural hizo poseedores a sus participantes de una bella y significativa experiencia, la calidez, cariño y amistad de los habitantes de la Comunidad hicieron aun más agradable y alegres las tareas a cumplir y la estadía en el lugar; sin duda hay cosas infinitas que tenemos que aprender de estos pueblos y su historia, conocimientos que están muy ligados a los valores en todos sus aspectos….gracias gente de Tamandua por su apertura y colaboración hacia el proyecto y por haber sido tan amables con nosotros, hemos vivido unos maravillosos días allí en sus tierras!!!!! Igualmente agradecemos a todas la personas que de una u otra forma ayudaron para que el proyecto fuera posible!!!! GRACIAS!!!!

Subir al Sur together with the community of Tamandua

From Saturday 8 to Friday 14 October we developed a Project together with the Community of Tamandua Guaraní Mbya of Misiones, this Project was supported by the Fundación desde América and the good disposition of the people from the community. The aims of the workcamp were to work on acknowledging diversity, exchange, international voluntary and cooperative work.
The workcamp was developed with the participation of Young students coming from the USA (a group organised by New York University Buenos Aires), children and adults of the community of Tamandua; with the coordination of two facilitators from Subir al Sur coming from Buenos Aires and inhabitants of the village of Tamandua.

During the project the following activities were undertaken: renovation through painting the Community centre, and drawing a mural which represented the spiritual and cordial aspect of the community; distinct workshops and talks which had the aim to create reflection on cultural diversity, the history and resistance of the Guarani people and the Community of Tamanadua. Another activity was to visit the school of the community; where volunteers and students experienced a reciprocal, rich and fluid exchange. I addition to this we did not miss recreate moments and games together with the children and young people of Tamandua.

This pluricultural encounter gave its participants a beautiful and significative experience, the warmth, kindness and friendship from the inhabitants of the community made the activities we were to develop even more enjoyable and fun. Without doubt there are many things we could learn from the inhabitants of these communities and their history, and knowledge which is very linked to value in all aspects.. thank you to the people of Tamandua for being so open and collaborating with the project and for having been so kind to us. We have lived some marvelous days in your lands!!!! We also thank all of the people who in one way or another helped to make the project possible!!! THANK YOU!!!.

Realicé un programa de voluntariado internacional de dos semanas en la ciudad de Philadelphia, en julio de 2011. Mi idea de EEUU había sido siempre la de un país que no necesita ayuda de otros, que está para ayudar al resto del mundo, el cual se encuentra más necesitado, pensaba que era un país sin mayores problemas de penurias, pobreza o falta de recursos dentro de sus fronteras. A los pocos minutos de llegar a Philadelphia y transitando algunas calles del sur de la ciudad me di cuenta de que estaba visitando una cara de EEUU que hasta ese momento no había visto. Muchas casas y negocios distaban mucho de la opulencia y la prolijidad que había visto en Boston, New York y Washington DC. Me di cuenta entonces que no era nada absurdo el haberme inscripto en un programa de voluntariado social en esa ciudad. Aquí también debía haber problemas sociales y tareas por hacer para la comunidad.
Justamente en el sur de la ciudad estaba el campamento de los voluntarios, una zona no muy lejana, como me enteraría luego, de algunas de las calles donde se filmó gran parte de la película Rocky, es decir, un barrio de clase trabajadora y lejos del confort del centro de la ciudad o de las zonas ricas.
Durante mi experiencia en esta ciudad ayudé junto con voluntarios de muchos otros países a gente en situación de calle y a personas de la comunidad, vi como el dolor de estas personas es el mismo que había visto en Argentina ante las mismas dificultades. Parecía no importar la distancia de latitudes. Los mecanismos de supervivencia emocional, espiritual y mental que las personas marginadas de la sociedad desarrollan es similar sin que importen las diferencias culturales o idiomáticas. La desconfianza, la dureza, las leyes de la calle eran las mismas que en Buenos Aires, donde yo había realizado trabajos sociales con distintas poblaciones durante años. Esto fue algo sumamente revelador y sorprendente para mí como voluntario y uno de los aprendizajes más fuertes de mi experiencia en Philadelphia.
Los voluntarios nos sentimos felices de poder colaborar ayudando a los demás, pero también confirmamos que queda mucho por hacer y que el cambio es lento.
El vivir en un barrio obrero de la ciudad me permitió conocer la parte de EEUU que no había conocido a pesar de viajar por varias ciudades, lo más importante: su gente. Pude establecer contacto con las personas comunes de barrio, conocer sus realidades, sus problemas cotidianos, sus proyectos, sus sueños, sus intereses, sus deseos, sus costumbres, su simpleza, sus modismos y muchas cosas más. Es decir, pude experimentar algo que como turista jamás hubiera conocido por más tiempo que me hubiese quedado. Al estar viviendo en el barrio, los vecinos se acercaban, se interesaban en nosotros, nos compartían sus cosas, sus días, se interesaban por nosotros como miembros (aunque transitorios) del barrio. Llegamos a sentirnos como vecinos, como si estuviéramos en nuestra propia comunidad, a pesar de que todos éramos de países distantes. Fue una sensación muy hermosa.
Durante mi experiencia como voluntario en Philadelphia no sólo pude ayudar y sentirme satisfecho, sino que, además, el hacerlo con voluntarios de países muy diferentes al mío me permitió crecer, aprender mucho de otros y expandir mis horizontes. Me hice amigos de países remotos, como República Checa y China, que no hubiera conocido en circunstancias normales. Estoy agradecido de haber decidido salir un poco de mi comodidad para lanzarme a una experiencia diferente.

I undertook an International voluntary service project for two weeks in the city of Philadelphia in July 2011. My idea of the USA has always been that of a country which does not need help from others and which is there to help the rest of the World, which is needed more, i thought it was a country without any problems like shortages, poverty or lack of resources within its frontiers. Within a few minutes of arriving to Philadelphia and passing through some streets on the South side of the city I realised that I was seeing a side of the USA which until the moment I had not seen. Many houses and shops were a far cry from the opulence and prolific nature I had seen in Boston, New York and Washington DC. I realised then that it wasn’t at all absurd that I had signed up for a social volunteer project in this city. Here there were also social problems and tasks to undertake for the community.
Exactly in the South of the city the workcamp was to take place with the volunteers, in a zone not very far from where I later realised, the most part of the Rocky film was made, a working class neighbourhood and far from the comfort of the centre of the city or the rich areas.
During my experience in this city helping people on the streets, and people in the community together with volunteers from many other countries, I saw how the pain of these people is the same as those of Argentina in front of the same circumstances. The distance between latitudes did not seem to matter. the emotional, spiritual and mental survival mechanisms which these people marginalized from society have developed is similar in spite of cultural or idiomatical differences. Distrust, hardship, the laws of the streets were the same as in Buenos Aires, where I had undertaken social work with different populations during years. This was something extremely revealing and surprising for me as a volunteer and one of the strongest lessons from my experience in Philadelphia.
The volunteers felt happy to be able to collaborate helping others, but we also agreed that there is a lot left to do and that change is slow.
To live in a working class neighbourhood allowed me to get to know part of the USA which I had not known in spite of travelling through several cities, the most important: its people. I could make contact with the people from the neighbourhood; get to know their realities, their daily problems, projects, dreams, interests, desires, habits, simplicity, modals and many more things. I could experiment something which as a tourist I would never have known in spite of the amount of time I may have stayed. Living in a neighbourhood, the neighbours came up to us, they were interested in us, they shared their things, their days, they were interested in us as members (although transitory) of the neighbourhood. We became to feel like neighbours, as if we were in our own community, in spite of the fact we were all from different countries. It was a beautiful sensation.
During my experience as a volunteer in Philadelphia I could not only help and feel satisfied, I could also do this together with volunteers from different countries very different from my own, this led me to grow, and to learn a lot from others and to expand my horizons. I made friends from remote countries such as the Czech Republic and China, whom I would not have known under normal circumstances. I am very thankful to have decided to leave my commodities to throw myself into a different experience.

Este encuentro fue super gratificante por varios motivos:
En primera instancia por el vinculo que se genero entre los voluntarios internacionales y locales lo que llevo a una reflexión sobre ciertas cuestiones en particular. Dado que fue un workcamp especial ya que tratamos la Participación Activa temática que esta en relación a el proyecto de Volunteering 2011.Estamos sumamente agradecidos por permitirnos compartir esta hermosa experiencia y por ayudarnos a descubrir un lugar en el mundo…

This first project for us was really gratifying for various reasons:
In the first place for the link which was created between the international and local volunteers which led us to certan reflections, also as this was a special project making part of Volunteering 2011 and we focused on Active Participation. We are very thankful to have been allowed to take part in this beautiful experience and for helping us to find a new place in the World...

Hoy Miércoles 17 de Agosto, los trabajos en la plazoleta de Villa Ana, continuaron con los Voluntarios Internacionales, el grupo “Quebrachito” y dos grupo de jóvenes de la zona que visitaron por el día de hoy el pueblo, el grupo “La esperanza”, del paraje El Gusano, que se encuentra a 10km al sur de Romang y el grupo “Jóvenes de Futuro”, de paraje Las Palmas.
El grupo “La esperanza”, está compuesto por 10 jóvenes, los cuales hacen distintas actividades comunitarias en su localidad para mejora y actividades recreativas que contribuyen a la integración de los que participen de estas.
Por otro lado, el grupo “Jóvenes del Futuro”, fue iniciado en Agosto de 2010 y en momento está integrado por 16 jóvenes, los cuales también hacen distintas actividades en su localidad.
Cabe destacar que hoy fue un día donde se hizo notar la colaboración de diferentes grupos y el trabajo en conjunto donde se avanzo mucho en la construcción de las sendas peatonales de la Plazoleta y se dio un buen clima de intercambio cultural y regional de ideas diversas.

Wednesday 17 August, the work in the “plazoleta” of Villa Ana continues with the International volunteers, Quebrachito and two groups of young people from the area who visited our village today. The Group “la Esperanza” from paraje el Gusano which can be found 10km south of Romang and the Group “Jóvenes de Futuro”, from paraje Las Palmas.
The group “La Esperanza”, is made up of 10 young people, who undertake distinct community actions to improve their locality, and recreation activities which promote inclusion of young people. The group “Jóvenes del Futuro”, was started in August 2010 and is made up of 16 young people who also undertake different activities in their locality.
Today was a day in which the different groups worked really well together, and the footpath through the “plazoleta” advanced a lot, the work together gave a great climate for intercultural and regional exchange and the sharing of diverse ideas.

Visit to /Visita a La Terrada

Los días jueves/viernes y sábado de la semana pasada los voluntarios internacionales, integrantes de Quebrachito y Subir al Sur visitaron el proyecto La Terrada www.laterrada.com.ar. Donde, participaron en una Obra Escuela de en la cuidad de Las Toscas, a 40 minutos de Villa Ana.
Giuseppe Mingola, integrante de La Terrada y unos jóvenes que trabajan en la obra, fueron los encargados de recibir a los voluntarios y participantes del proyecto. Los voluntarios empezaron pisando el barro, a armar estructuras para hacer una técnica de construcción con tierra que se llama, “Fajina y tierra proyectada”- son dos técnicas de construcción con Tierra. A la noche el Jueves se dio una presentación del proyecto La Terrada y el porque de la construcción con tierra. El Intendente de la cuidad dio el bienvenida a los voluntarios.
El viernes seguimos con los trabajos y sábado tomamos un día de descanso a lado del río.

Last Thursday, Friday and Saturday the international volunteers along with members of Quebrachito and Subir al Sur visited the Project La Terrada www.laterrada.com.ar. The volunteers participated in a building school in the town of Las Toscas, 40 minutes away from Villa Ana.
Giusepe Mingola, a member of La Terrada received the group along with some of the young people involved in the Project. The volunteers started to tread mud, to make the structures in order to undertake a natural building technique called wattle and daub, and thrown earth. On Thursday evening we were given an introduction to the project La Terrada and about hay we should use natural construction and the mayor of the town came to welcome us.
Friday we continued with the natural construction techniques and on Saturday we went to rest by the river.

Ayer 9 de Agosto, llego a Villa Ana una voluntaria más, procedente de Bolivia de nuestros socios Red Tinku, siendo así ya 7 voluntarios extranjeros en integrar el Study Camp 2011.

La mañana empezó con trabajos diversos en la Plazoleta del pueblo.

Por la tarde se llevo adelante en el CIC (centro comunitario) de la localidad un taller sobre la Participación Activa (P.A.), donde concurrieron los voluntarios, los facilitadores e integrantes de grupo Quebrachito.

Se trabaron los temas que hacen a una P.A; la importancia de entenderla para su posterior aplicación en el campo de trabajo.

El taller empiezo con un presentación de volunteering 2011 por la directora de Subir al Sur y luego había una seria de grupos de trabajo y debates, más una muestra por parte de los facilitadores del proyecto, “Rocío Ruete y Eduardo Martinez”, para lograr en conjunto una definición de la P.A; así como trabajos que detallen el tipo de registro a utilizar.

Hoy 10 de Agosto, llego un voluntario Peruano de nuestros socios BVBP, siendo así 8 voluntarios extranjeros en pisar las calles Villanenses para este Intercambio de Voluntariado.

El día de hoy se destacó por el trabajo importante realizado en la Plazoleta y va a concurrir con un Fogón y reflexión sobre el primera Encuentro Intercultural/workcamp en Villa Ana en 2006.

Yesterday 9 August, one more volunteer arrived to Villa Ana from Bolivia from our Partners Red TInku, there are now 7 volunteers on the Study camp.

The morning started with different activities in the community Square. In the afternoon the volunteers met in the CIC (community centre) to take part in Workshops on Active Participation where the volunteers, facilitators and members of Quebrachito were present.

The volunteers worked on the themes which make Active Participation, and the importance of understanding what Active Participation is in order to apply this in the study camp.

The workshop started with a presentation of volunteering 2011 by a the director of Subir al Sur and then there were a series of working groups and debates including a presentation by the facilitators of the project “Rocío Ruete y Eduardo Martinez”, so that the volunteers could make a definition of what Active Participation is, and in order to create a tool to register active participation.

Today 10 August a Peruvian volunteer arrived from our Partners BVBP, making 8 volunteers walking around the streets of Villa Ana for this intercultural Exchange.

Today the volunteers made an important advance in the work in the Square and this evening will finish with a Bonfire and reflection on the first ever workcamp run in Villa Ana in 2006.

Hoy Lunes 8 de Agosto, Villa Ana ha recibido la llegada de 6 voluntarios extranjeros que van a estar participando del 6to Encuentro Intercultural/Study Camp, realizado cada año consecutivo en dicho pueblo. Entre los voluntarios llegados, hay 4 chicos y 2 chicas, de nacionalidades diversas como, de Francia, Inglaterra, Italia, Corea del Sur y Bolivia. En las próximas horas estarán arribando 2 voluntarios más, uno de Perú y otro de Bolivia; van a estar residiendo por aquí por las próximas 2 semanas, que es la duración de proyecto.
El día de hoy se comenzó por la mañana con una breve presentación entre los voluntarios extranjeros, el Grupo Juvenil Comunitario Quebrachito y Subir al Sur, quienes van a estar trabajando en conjunto el trazado y pavimentado de sendas peatonales internas de la Plazoleta de Villa Ana (que fue construido junto a Quebrachito con voluntarios internacionales en 2006), también se van hacer reparación de juegos entre otras actividades. El encuentro /Study camp tiene como objetivo desarrollar y plasmar la idea de lo que es “la participación activa”, esto como eje central del Study camp 2011. este proyecto forma parte de una serie de seminarios y encuentros interculturales en 4 continentes durante 2011 adentro del marco de volunteering 2011 un proyecto desarrollado por CCIVS UNESCO- los resultados de proyecto formaron parte de un libro blanco de voluntariado que contendrá los objetivos del servicio voluntariado internacional para los próximos diez años.
Por la tarde se hizo una Tour por el pueblo, donde los voluntarios caminaron las calles y visitaron lugares de Referencia.
Mañana por la mañana ya van a empezar el 1er día de trabajo en la Plazoleta; asta hoy cabe destacar que el estuvo muy bueno.

Today Monday 8 August, Villa Ana received 6 international volunteers who will be participating in the 6th study camp in the locality. There are 4 boys and 2 girls who have arrived to the camp from distinct nationalities such as France, England, Italy, South Korea and Bolivia. In the next hours there will be two more volunteers arriving from Peru and Bolivia. The volunteers will stay in the village for two weeks. The day started with a brief presentation of Subir al Sur and Quebrachito who will be working together to improve the paving and to repair games in one of the local squares in villa ana- (the square was created in the first Project run in this locality in 2006 with the support of international volunteers). The study camp has the objective of developing and recording information related to Active Participation. This is the central point of the study camp 2011 which makes part of a series of seminars and studycamps which are taking place in 4 continents during 2011 in the frame of Volunteering 2011- a project developed by CCIVS-UNESCO. The results of the projects will make part of a white book of volunteering which will contain the objectives for International Voluntary Service for the next 10 years.
In the Afternoon the volunteers had a guided tour of the village and visited key places.
Tomorrow morning the first day of work will start in the square. Today was a very good day!

1. Por the sixth time in Villa Ana, Santa Fe in August, we will run Workshops on Active Participation and the reconstruction of a town Square which was made by local and International volunteers in 2006.
2. A new project in September in Misiones in a Mbya Guarani Community where we hope to construct a room for a playschool.

Subir al Sur firmo un convenio de trabajo con la Asociación Civil “Quinta de la Familia Liliane”, La Asoc. Civil “Quinta de la Familia Liliane” es una entidad sin fines de lucro que trabaja en la rehabilitación psicofísica de niños y jóvenes con y sin discapacidad que viven en situación de pobreza y vulnerabilidad social, brindando de esta manera un espacio auténtico de integración contención, promoción y recreación, donde se convive y se aprenda sin diferencias. El proyecto de voluntariado consiste en trabajar con niños y jóvenes con problemas sociales que viven en barrios carenciados (con necesidades básicas insatisfechas, discapacidades físicas. Subir al Sur has signed a working agreement with the civil society association ““Quinta de la Familia Liliane”, The Asoc. Civil “Quinta de la Familia Liliane” is a non profit organization which works on the psychophysical rehabilitation of children and young people with or without disabilities who live in poverty and social vulnerability, we give in this way an authentic space of integration, containment, promotion and recreation, where the children and young people can interact together and learn without differences. The volunteer project consists in working with children and young people with social problems who live in underprivileged neighbourhoods (with unsatisfied basic necessities, physical disabilities etc). Proyecto Comunidad Tamandua:
Caracterìsticas de la Comunidad

La comunidad Tamandua de indígenas Mbyá Guaraní, está situada a 13 kms. por camino de tierra, de la localidad de 25 de mayo, Departamento 25 de mayo, en el centro de la Provincia de Misiones, Argentina.
La comunidad está compuesta por 30 familias, un total de 140 personas, esto varía según la época ya que muchos de los integrantes de la comunidad tienen familiares que van y vienen constantemente.
Si bien las personas de la comunidad están abiertas a nuevas formas de vida, mantienen fuertemente sus pautas culturales y en especial lo que es la espiritualidad propia de los Mbya Guaraní, por lo tanto siguen teniendo su Opy (casa dedicada a la realización de las ceremonias y rituales, construida de barro y cañas) y por supuesto siempre es fundamental la figura del Opyguá o chamán, guía espiritual de la comunidad.
La organización social y política es responsabilidad del cacique que es elegido por consenso por los miembros de la comunidad.
Las autoridades de la comunidad de Tamandua son actualmente:

La Historia

Las primeras familias llegaron a ese lugar hace ya más de 40 años. En aquel momento eran solamente tres: la familia de Dionisio Duarte quien era el cacique General de las Comunidades del Pueblo Mbya Guarani junto con sus cuatro hijos y dos familias más.
Recién en el año 1997 se entrega el título comunitario de las 3.200 hectáreas que ocupa hoy la comunidad.
El año pasado se festejaron los 25 años de la creación de la escuela Bilingüe nº 683 (“Yakà Paù”, que quiere decir en castellano, “entre medio de los arroyos”).
La comunidad cuenta también con un puesto de Salud, dos agentes sanitarios indígenas y la atención médica una vez por semana
La comunidad posee agua corriente a través de la perforación que se realizó por intermedio de un proyecto, hace 8 años, durante el cual también se construyeron baños con duchas dentro de la comunidad.

Proyecto:

En el marco del reconocimiento de la pluriculturalidad de la Argentina, Subir al Sur, Fundación desdeAmérica y la Comunidad Tamandua proponen este Encuentro Intercultural que tiene como eje el reconocimiento de la diversidad, el intercambio y el trabajo cooperativo.
A lo largo de las dos semanas de convivencia se llevaran a cabo diferentes actividades:

• Construcción de una sala de jardín de infantes o Reacondicionamiento del Centro Comunitario (a confirmar en los próximos meses)
• Recreación y actividades lúdicas con los niños
• Talleres de intercambio cultural
Durante el transcurso del proyecto los voluntarios también participarán de distintos talleres y charlas que tendrán como eje la reflexión acerca de la diversidad cultural, la historia y la identidad.

I started my journey on December 31 at night, and after changing planes and a lot of travelling, I arrived on January 2nd, already 2011, to Delhi´s airport. I did not go to the city there, because I took another plane to Jodhpur, in the state of Rajasthan, where the entire group was meeting the following day.
In Jodhpur, to reach the place I would be spending in the night, I decided to take an autorickshaw (also called oto or tuc-tuc), because I wanted to begin experiencing Indian culture from the start. On the way, I started to observe many of the things I have read about or watched on tv before arriving there; cows sitting on garbage piles on the streets, chaotic and deafening traffic, several people on the same motorcycle and women sitting on their sides without holding on to anything with their clothings hanging… I was amazed and extremely happy for having decided to go to India, for I wanted to see something different from what I am used to seeing.
When I arrived at the hotel, the personnel saw to it that my short stay was pleasant and they were very obliging. So the next day, having had a delicious breakfast and tried my first masala chai (to which I became practically addicted and I drank many more during the journey), I headed for our meeting point: the city´s main train station. While I waited for the time of the meeting, as I watched people coming and going, I was surprised to see a few events that later became familiar. For example, people don´t mind throwing garbage everywhere they´re at (that was the most difficult thing I had to get used to since I am very picky on that subject, hehe), and men spit everywhere o burp while they are eating.
At 11 a.m., after noticing that no one had arrived, I called the leader of the group, Deepak. It was then I realized I was at the wrong spot within the station so I quickly gathered my luggage and went to find the rest of the team. Luckily, they were just a few metres away. Right then, I met my partners for the next two weeks: Yuna, Kahee y Seongyheon, from South Korea, Pepita from Austria and Sabrina from France. Only Marta, from Germany, was missing, because she was arriving the following day.
We went to lunch together, and we got to know more about each other: where we came from, whether we were students, if this was our first experience… Later, we walked through the streets near the station, where we began to experience several things: different smells from the stands on the streets, vegetable and fruits sellers with their wooden carts parked in the middle of the street, the insistence of a few sellers asking for us to go and take a look, tuc- tuc drivers constantly stopping to ask us where we wanted to go…and all that was happening while we were dodging cars, motorcycles, bicycles and other vehicles that run through the street, because as in most inner cities in India, there is practically no sidewalk to stand on.
Then we went back to the station where Ahbib, the owner of the house in which we were staying, was expecting us. After placing all our luggage on the roof of the jeep, and somehow finding the way for all of us to get in, we started our one-hour journey to Chirayo Ki Dhani.
This village is in a zone that we cannot exactly call a desert because there are some trees and sand is not everywhere, but there is scarcity of water and the sun is quite hot even in the afternoon. When we arrived, we greeted everybody with the only word we knew at that time, NAMASTE, and we were offered chai in the yard while our rooms were tidied up.
It was a very simple house, though it had everything we needed: the bathroom was a latrine that was actually outside and we could not throw toilet paper inside since there was no way of flushing the toilet. We had to throw it in a bag. The shower was on the inside; a cold water faucet and some buckets and recipients. This is very common in India, even hotels have buckets in the shower because people usually bathe by throwing themselves water from the recipients. Even though we got two rooms, we decided to sleep only in one and keep the luggage on the other one, which would later turn to be our dining room for it was pretty dark and chilly outside at night. We ate chiapati that night (a kind of bread made only out of flour and wáter. It is very popular, and we would end up finding it in every meal next to the rice), rice and daal, some type of stew with lentils. Just like every time we had a meal, we sit round on the floor and we used our hands to eat, which amused me very much, and I even thought about implenting that at home!
Next morning, after a delicious breakfast prepared by who would become our cook during the whole stay. that consisted in the very sweet ever present chai, omelette and toasts with jam, we walked towards the school to begin our work. On the way there many people went out of their houses to say hello or simply see who these new people were. Children followed us all the way there and back, and stayed with us at the school. They asked about our names, so every day they greeted us by our name. They loved pictures so much that they asked us to take one all the time and see how it turned out afterwards. They played and ran around us on the way back.
Children were on vacations during the first week so they came to visit us while we were at home. Once, we made a presentation about our countries and, on another occasion, Samsha, one of the girls in the house, made all of us mehndi tatoos (henna). Our house had electricity and TV, so people came to watch soap operas, the indian type, or movies with people dancing all the time. Once in while we also watched it just out of pure curiosity.
So, the first week passed, working in the school in the morning and sometimes in the evening, sharing time with the children of the neighbourhood, making daily meetings after dinner… and even taking some dancing lessons from Samsha and her friends! During the weekend we visited Jodhpur and we even went on a safari on a cammel through the desert.
We continued painting the school the following week. Just the outside walls were missing, where we first had to sand and then paint twice. Later, we began with the drawings that a man gave us. He represents an indian organization that together with FSL and people from the place are working to build bathrooms in all the houses of the village and educate on cleanliness and hygiene. The drawings took us quite a while but we could finish everything on time.
The children returned to classes in the last days, so we had the chance to see them wearing their uniforms, and also praying before classes began while lining up (it was a Muslim village). Last day, before leaving, we visited the school again to say goodbye to the headmaster, the teachers and, of course, the children, who gave us more than we gave them, with their constant laughs and smiles and their insatiable curiosity. After we went home, where we took pictures and we said goodbye to the family, thanked them all for being so helpful and kind to us. Samsha was sad, hugged us and thanked all of us… she was such a sweetheart! Even though they don´t speak English but Hindi, their local tongue, someway or another we managed to understand each other, either Deepak translated for us, or we understood thanks to the few words we learned during the stay, but most of the times a smile or a gesture of gratitude managed to expressed what we wanted to transmit.
The truth is that without this opportunity it would have been difficult for me to experience everything I did any other way… I learned fascinating things about India and met wonderful people filled with aspirations and willing to better themselves. Obviously, there is also the harsh side that any reality has, but that is what makes us cherish what we have, and in my case, and the case of most people, increases the will and strenght to keep participating in these projects, doing our share and no matter how small the contribution is, that helps to improve that reality.
I would like to thank Subir al Sur and FSL India for giving me this chance, that has been one of the more special ones in my life, and I also wish is not the last one. I truly admire all the work they do. I also want to thank my family, for checking on me all the time and having supported and helped me since the moment I decide to participate. Lastly, I want to thank my friends and our fantastic leader for having made the work much more easier and sharing with me these wonderful weeks.

Emprendí mi viaje el 31 de diciembre a la noche, y después de algún que otro cambio e avión y varias horas de viaje, llegué el 2 de enero, ya era el 2011, al aeropuerto de Delhi. Allí no salí a la ciudad, sino que tomé otro avión que me llevaría hasta Jodhpur, en el estado de Rajasthan, donde al día siguiente nos encontraríamos todo el grupo.
En Jodhpur, para ir al lugar donde me hospedaría por una noche, decidí tomarme un autorickshaw (también llamado oto o tuc-tuc), ya que quería comenzar a experimentar la cultura india desde un principio. En el camino ya fui observando muchas de las cosas sobre las que había leído o visto por la televisión antes de ir: vacas en las calles sentadas sobre montículos de basuras, el tráfico ensordecedor y caótico, varias personas en una misma motocicleta y las mujeres sentadas de costado sin agarrarse de nada con todas sus telas colgando… Estaba asombrada y más que contenta de haber decidido ir a la India, porque quería ver algo distinto de lo que estaba acostumbrada.
Cuando llegué al hotel las personas que trabajan allí se preocuparon por hacer mi corta estadía placentera y fueron muy serviciales. Así que al día siguiente, después de un riquísimo desayuno donde probé mi primer masala chai (al que me volví prácticamente adicta ya que tomé muchísimos más el resto del viaje), salí en dirección a nuestro punto de encuentro: la estación de tren principal de la ciudad. Mientras esperaba que sea la hora, observaba a la gente ir y venir en la estación, me sorprendí con alguna que otra situación que después se volverían cotidianas, como el hecho de que no se preocupan por buscar un lugar para arrojar la basura sino que la tiran en el mismo lugar donde se encuentran (esta fue a la que más me costó acostumbrarme ya que con el tema de la basura soy muy pesada, jaja) , que los hombres escupen por todos lados o mientras están comiendo eructan sin ningún problema.
Cuando se hicieron las 11 de la mañana y vi que aún no había llegado nadie, llamé a quien iba a ser el líder del grupo, Deepak. Entonces me di cuenta que estaba en un lugar equivocado de la estación, así que rápidamente junté mi equipaje y fui en busca del resto del grupo, que por suerte estaban en otro lugar a unos pocos metros nomás. Allí conocí a quienes iban a ser mis compañeras durante las dos semanas siguientes: Yuna, Kahee y Seongyheon, de Corea del Sur, Pepita de Austria y Sabrina, de Francia. Aún faltaba Marta, de Alemania, que llegaría al día siguiente.
Fuimos a almorzar todos juntos, donde seguimos conociéndonos más: de qué parte éramos, si estudiábamos, cuántos años teníamos, si esta era nuestra primera experiencia... Después de allí caminamos un poco por las calles cercanas a la estación, donde empezamos a experimentar los distintos olores de los puestos callejeros de comida, los vendedores de frutas y vegetales con sus carros de madera estacionados en plena calle, la insistencia de algunos vendedores que nos llamaban desde sus locales para que vayamos a echar un vistazo, los conductores de tuc-tuc que constantemente paraban para preguntarnos dónde queríamos ir; todo esto mientras sorteábamos los autos, motos, bicicletas y demás vehículos que transitaban por la calle, ya que como en la mayoría de la ciudades del interior de India, no hay prácticamente veredas para caminar.
Luego volvimos a la estación donde nos esperaba Ahbib, quien sería el dueño de la casa donde nos hospedaríamos durante nuestro voluntariado. Una vez que colocamos nuestro equipaje sobre el techo del jeep, y de alguna manera arreglarnos para caber todos adentro, iniciamos nuestro viaje de una hora hacia Chirayo Ki Dhani.
Esta aldea queda en una zona que, si bien no es estrictamente desierto en el hecho que hay algunos árboles y no todo es arena, sí existe escasez de agua y el sol de la tarde es bastante intenso. Cuando llegamos saludos a todos con la única palabra que a esa altura conocíamos, NAMASTE, y luego nos ofrecieron chai en el patio de la casa mientras acomodaban la que sería nuestra habitación.
La casa era muy sencilla, pero contaba con todo lo que necesitábamos: el baño era una letrina que en realidad quedaba afuera y no podíamos arrojar papel higiénico ya que no tenía cadena, por lo que debíamos depositarlo en una bolsa. El lugar para ducharse quedaba adentro; era una canilla de agua fría y
había algunos baldes y recipientes. Esto es una costumbre muy común en India, ya que incluso muchos hoteles tienen baldes en la ducha porque ellos suelen bañarse no utilizando la ducha sino arrojándose el agua directamente con distintos recipientes. Si bien nos dieron dos habitaciones, decidimos dormir todas en una y la otra dejarla para los bolsos, que después se convertiría también en nuestro comedor ya que a la noche hacía mucho frío afuera y no había luz, cosa que adentro sí. Ese día cenamos chiapati (una especie de pan hecho solamente con harina y agua que es muy popular y que estaría en todas nuestras comidas junto con el arroz), arroz y daal, una especie de guiso con lentejas. Como todas las comidas, nos sentamos en una ronda en el suelo y comimos con las manos, algo me resultó muy divertido, ¡e incluso pensé en implementarlo de vuelta en casa con algunos platos!
A la mañana siguiente, después de un riquísimo desayuno preparado por quien sería nuestro cocinero durante toda la estadía, que consistió en el siempre presente muy dulce chai, omelette y tostadas con mermelada, partimos a pie a conocer la escuela donde realizaríamos nuestro trabajo. Durante el camino muchas personas salían de sus casas a saludarnos o simplemente ver quiénes eran esas personas nuevas. Los niños nos siguieron todo el camino, ida y vuelta, y también se quedaban con nosotros en la escuela. Nos preguntaban cómo nos llamábamos, con lo que todos los otros días nos saludan por nuestro nombre. Les encantaban las fotos, tanto que todo el tiempo querían que les saquemos algunas y después pedían verlas. Jugaban y corrían alrededor nuestro en el camino hacia la escuela.
Como la primera semana les habían dado vacaciones, mientras estábamos en la casa también iban a visitarnos, como cuando dimos las presentaciones de nuestros países, o cuando Samsha, una de las nenas de la casa nos hizo a todas tatuajes de mendi (henna). También como nuestra casa era una de las que tenía electricidad y televisión, varios iban a la noche a ver las novelas, esas que tanto hay en la televisión india, o películas donde están bailando prácticamente todo el tiempo. De vez en cuando nosotras íbamos a ver también por simple curiosidad.
Así pasó la primera semana, trabajando a la mañana en la escuela y a veces también a la tarde, compartiendo con los chicos del lugar, haciendo las reuniones diarias después de la cena, ¡e incluso algunas clases de bailes típicos por parte de Samsha y sus amigas! Durante el fin de semana visitamos Jodhpur e incluso hicimos un safari en camello por el desierto.
La semana siguiente continuamos con la pintura en la escuela. Nos faltaba terminar parte de la parte de afuera, donde primeros debimos lijar y luego hicimos dos capas de pintura. Después comenzamos con los dibujos que nos dio un señor que representa a una organización india que junto con FSL y personas del lugar están trabajando para instalas baños en todas las casas de la aldea y educar sobre prácticas de aseo y limpieza. Los dibujos nos llevaron bastante tiempo, pero igualmente pudimos terminar todo a tiempo.
Los últimos días los chicos habían retomados las clase, así que tuvimos la oportunidad de verlos vestidos con sus uniformes escolares, también rezando antes de iniciar las clases (era una aldea musulmana) mientras formaban. Antes de irnos el último día visitamos nuevamente la escuela para despedirnos del director y los maestros y, por supuesto, los chicos, que nos dieron más ello a nosotros que nosotros a ellos, con sus risas y sonrisas constantes e insaciable curiosidad. Después volvimos a la casa, donde nos sacamos fotos y despedimos de la familia, les agradecimos por lo servicial y amables que habían sido con nosotros. Samsha estaba triste y nos abrazó y agradeció a cada una de nosotras, ¡un amor! A pesar de que no hablaban inglés, sino hindi y su lengua regional, de alguna manera u otro lográbamos entendernos, ya sea que Deepak nos traducía o por las pocas palabras en hindi que íbamos aprendiendo, pero muchas veces una sonrisa o gesto de agradecimiento lograba expresar lo que queríamos transmitir.
La verdad que esta experiencia me hizo vivir cosas que de otra manera hubiera sido más difícil experimentarlas; aprendí cosas fascinantes sobre la India, conocí a personas maravillosas y con muchas aspiraciones y ganas de superarse. También por supuesto está el lado duro que toda realidad tiene, pero eso es lo que nos hace valorar lo que tenemos, y en el caso mío, como estoy segura que de muchas otras personas, induce en nosotros más ganas y más energía para seguir participando de estos proyectos, haciendo nuestro aporte, por más mínimo que sea, pero que en el conjunto suma, para poder mejorar esa realidad.
Quisiera agradecer a Subir al Sur y a FSL India por haberme brindado esta oportunidad, que ha sido una de las más especiales de mi vida, y tengo el deseo de que no sea la única. Admiro realmente todo el trabajo que hacen. También decir gracias a mi familia, que ha estado pendiente de mi todo el tiempo y me ha apoyado y ayudado desde el momento en que decidí participar, y por último a mis compañeras y nuestro genial líder, por haber hecho el trabajo en grupo tan llevadero y compartir conmigo esas semanas maravillosas.

El Equipo de Educación se reunió con la Fundadora de Subir al Sur la semana pasada en un momento de reflexión y análisis de la situación actual de la asociación. Salimos muy contentas de la reunión con una profundo sentimiento de crecimiento al nivel institucional y con mucha esperanza hacía el futuro.

We left the meeting very happy, with a profound sense of development on an institutional level and looking forward to the future development of Subir al Sur.

Subir al Sur organizo una reunión el viernes 18 de Febrero para los potenciales multiplicadores- personas que quieren ayudar con la difusión de nuestras actividades- en Capital Federal.En esta reunión se generaron muy buenas ideas para hacer este año mas conocido el proyecto de Subir al Sur al nivel nacional.
Se trabajo principalmente en el programa Subir al Mundo que trata sobre la difusión y el envío de argentinos hacia proyectos de voluntariado internacional en (casi) todo el mundo.

Subir al Sur organised a meeting on Friday 18 February in the Capital City with the potential 'multipliers'- people who would like to volunteer to diffuse information regarding Subir al Sur's activities. Some great ideas for gaining recognition of Subir al Sur's activities on a national level were generated in this meeting.
We worked principally on the ‘Subir al Mundo’ program which focuses on diffusion and sending of Argentines to international volunteer projects in (almost!) the entire World

En el día 29 de enero de 2011, Subir al Sur, recibió seis voluntarios de los cuales cuatro eran de nacionalidad francesa, uno de nacionalidad alemana y por ultimo uno de nacionalidad belga, los voluntarios fueron mandados por nuestros socios internacionales: Concordia France, Javva Bélgica, Jeunesse y Reconstrucción Francia y VJF Alemania. Los voluntarios participaran en los proyectos Eco Clubes Clorinda y Agrupación I.D.E.A.S de duración entre 1 mes y 3 meses.
Fue un trabajo y experiencia grupal muy interesante, agradecemos a Casa Natura para el uso de su salón. Y Subir al Sur quiere dar un gracias especial a Santaigo y Gaston nuevos integrantes al equipo de facilitadores de Subir al Sur por todo su trabajo!

On the 29th of January 2001, Subir al Sur received six volunteers, 4 volunteers from France, one from germany and one from Belgium, sent by our international partners Concordia France, Javva Belgium, Jeunesse y Reconstrucción France and VJF Germany. The volunteers will participate in projects with Eco Clubes Clorinda and Agrupación I.D.E.A.S and will stay between one and three months.

Subir al Sur visita/vists Red Tinku

Sol y Regina, integrantes de nuestros Equipo de Educación, pasaron sus vacaciones en Bolivia. Aprovecharon la oportunidad para visitar Red Tinku, nuestra organización socia del país hermano.
Fueron excelentemente recibidas por Ramiro y se hospedaron en La Tinkuna, Centro Cultural de la organización en donde los primeros viernes de cada mes se realiza una fiesta a la Pachamama entre otras numerosas actividades.
Realizaron Tinku Tours, visitas a lugares locales desde una perspectiva profunda y no comercial.
También tuvieron la oportunidad de brindar un taller sobre Encuentros Interculturales y la metodología de SAS para llevarlos a cabo. Participaron integrantes activos de Red Tinku y voluntarios internacionales. Pudieron compartir e intercambiar experiencias soñando con concretar de a poco un mayor acercamiento entre las organizaciones del Sur.
Esperamos recibir para nuestro Encuentro de Agosto en Villa Ana, Santa Fe a un integrante de Red Tinku para seguir estrechando nuestros lazos.

Sol and Regina, members of the Subir al Sur Education Team, spent their holidays in Bolivia. They used this opportunity to visit Red Tinku, our partner organisation in our neighbouring country.
They were really well received by Ramiro and stayed in the “Tinkuna”, the cultural centre of the organisation where the first Friday of every month a party to the Pacha Mama is organised along with many other activities.
Sol and Regi took part in a “Tinku Tours”, visiting local places with a profound and not global perspective.
They also had the opportunity to give a workshop on “Workcamps” and the methodology used by Subir al Sur. Active members of Red Tinku participated along with International volunteers. There was the chance to share and Exchange experiences and dreaming of creating stronger links between the organistions of the South.
We hope to receive a member of Red Tinku for our workcamp in Villa Ana, Santa Fe in order to continue to strengthen our links.
We take this opportunity to thank Red Tinku for their hospitality.

Congreso Internacional del Servicio Voluntariado/ International Congress of Voluntary Service

Subir al Sur forma parte del equipo facilitadora del Congreso Internacional del Servicio Voluntariado organizado por CCSVI (comité de coordinación de voluntariado internacional) y COCAT (Campos de trabajo de Cataluña) en Barcelona del 1 – 5 de diciembre 2010. El congreso forma parte del primer fase de Volunteering 2011 -2021: Estrategias Globales para cambios globales- El movimiento de jóvenes voluntarios respondiendo a los desafíos de sustentabilidad, inclusión social y los Objetivos de Desarrollo del Milenio. Los participantes decidieran las prioridades principales y estrategias para las próximas 10 años a través de debates y talleres sobre los diferentes áreas de trabajo del servicio voluntariado (ie. Participación activa y inclusión social, medio ambiente y sustentabilidad, patrimonio cultural y diversidad, pobreza y salud, derechos humanos y paz)

Participaran alrededor de 150 socios internacionales de más que 60 países durante este congreso y vamos a tener la posibilidad de trabajar sobre la fortalecimiento regional (latin america, europa, áfrica, asia) y organizar encuentros distintos en países diversos- Subir al Sur y sus socios locales Quebrachito organizara un encuentro intercultural en agosto adentro del marco del proyecto.

Subir al Sur is part of the facilitation team for the International Congress of Voluntary Service organised by CCIVS (Coordinating committee for International voluntary service) and COCAT (workcamps Catalunya) in Barcelona from the 1 – 5 December 2010. The congress is part of the first phase of Volunteering 2011-2021: Global Strategies for Global Challenges – The Youth Volunteering Movement answering the Challenges of Sustainability, Social Inclusion and the Millennium Development Goals. The participants will decide the principal priorities and strategies for the next 10 years through debates and Workshops around the different areas of work of the International voluntary service movement (ie. Active Participation and Social Inclusion, Environment and Sustainability, Cultural Heritage and Diversity, Poverty and Health, Human Rights and Peace).

Around 150 international Partners will be participating from more than 60 countries during the Congress and we will be working on strengthening regional relations (America Latina, Asia, Africa, Europe) and will organise distinct encounters in different countries- Subir al Sur will organize an International workcamp in August with its local partners Quebrachito within the frame work of this Project.

Mi voluntariado en Dharamsala, India/ My Volunteering in DHARAMSALA, INDIA

Hola, mi nombre es Yamila, soy de Argentina y este año en septiembre participe de un voluntariado en India y gracias a “Subir al Sur” pude cumplir ese sueño que espera hace tanto tiempo….
No se puede expresar con palabras esa increible experiencia, pero tratare de hacerles sentir lo que se percibe en esos lugares. despues de un viaje agotador llegue finalmente a Delhi donde me esperaba mi amiga Pía, con quien emprendimos este sueño. Delhi….fue impactante en todo sentido, los lugares, los colores, los olores, la gente….recorrimos en un rickshow parte de la ciudad vieja, donde las calles de barro estaban atestadas de gente caminando bajo una lluvia torrencial casi como si fuera un hermoso dia soleado. Chiquitos semi desnudos pidiendo comida, vacas y perros revolviendo las montañas de basura en medio de las calles, y los olores de los puestos de comida inundaban el ambiente…esa fue la impresión que nos mostro Delhi en un par de horas…continuamos nuestro viaje hacia Dharamsala en un autobus que parecia de otro tiempo….alli nos encontramos con dos chicas españolas que participaban en el mismo proyecto que nosotras, lo que hizo mucho mas ameno el interminable viaje de 14 horas….El bus nos dejo en el pueblo de Mcleod Ganj….un pueblito de refugiados Tibetanos, un lugar increible, lleno de un aire puro y pacifico que nunca antes habia experimentado…una vez alli, nos reunimos con la gente de FSL India y con los demas voluntarios. nuestro hospedaje quedaba en otro pueblo llamado Dharamkot, mas arriba en la montaña…otro lugar encantador, con sus pequeñas callecitas llenas de carteles de cursos de yoga, reiki y masajes….”Krishna Guest House” fue nuestro lugar durante los 21 dias del proyecto…en medio de selva, montañas y nubes….muy cerca del cielo … alli nos acomodamos, desde nuestra habitacion podiamos ver todo el inmenso paisaje delante nuestro, y por las noches el cielo estrellado parecia un cuadro enmarcado en la ventana….
Goutham, el coordinador del grupo, inicio la presentacion de FSL y luego cada uno de nosotros, los 20 voluntarios de difernetes paises, fuimos presentandonos, alli nos explicaron las actividades que empezarian el dia siguiente temprano por la mañana…
A las 8:15 era el desayuno, todos sentados en almohadones alrededor de una mesa compartiendo el chai tea, pankackes, porridge y frutas….a las 9:30 emprendiamos el camino hacia la escuela…una caminata de 25 minutos entre las montañas adornadas con las banderas de oracion de los Tibetanos, los monos, las vacas y los monjes caminando lentamente con sus coloridos paraguas…al llegar ahí, los chicos, los maestros y el director de la escuela nos recibieron con sonrisas y un poco de asombro tambien podia verse en los rostros felices de los niños….En seguida pude establecer esa conexión que no se puede describir con palabras, esa conexión que va mas alla del lenguaje, de las costumbres y de la religion…la conexión de la compasion y el amor, del querer dar todo esperando sentir y ver la felicidad en esa gente tan diferente a nosotros, pero a la vez tan parecidos….a traves de juegos, canciones y bailes pasamos gran parte del dia, mientras algunos de nosotros plantaban arboles, otros limpiabamos el patio lleno de escombros para poder empezar asi la remodelacion de las aulas de la pequeña escuela….despues del almuerzo (arroz, dal, chapati, verduras) los dejamos estudiando y fuimos a la visita de un templo tibetano en mcleod ganj…a las 7:30 era la cena y la daily meeting con la presentacion de los paises de los integrantes del voluntariado…y asi fueron transcurriendo los dias, ayudando en la enseñanza de ingles, lijando y pintando el aula que seria nuestro pequeño y gran aporte a esas personas tan alejadas de nuestro mundo occidental como nosotros del de ellos pero aprendiendo juntos a copartirlos, y cada dia con una experiencia nueva y conociendo lugares maravillosos como las cascadas, los templos, los lugares de artesanias locales, las fabricas de tapetes, los jardines, en fin…todo aquello que pertenecia a su cultura para poder estar un poco mas cerca de las cosas que habitualmente no vemos ….las cosas mas simples y mas bellas que jamas haya visto y el verlas, sentirlas y comprenderlas fue algo que abrio nuestras mentes de una forma muy natural a ese mundo nuevo que estabamos conociendo…
Debo decir que fue mas asombroso de lo que habia imaginado, esta experiencia sobrepaso mis expectativas, me descubri mas fuerte y mas abierta de lo que crei ser, desde el primer momento me senti a gusto en el lugar, casi como si hubiera vivido toda mi vida alli, me acostumbre a todo tan rapido que lo conocido antes desaparecio por completo de mi mente y de mis costumbres. caminar por esas calles de mcleod ganj con el sonido de los mantras que salian del templo, los mojes, las ferias de artesanias con los ancianos locales vendiendo mantas, las vacas caminando junto a nosotros, el olor del te de gengibre y miel, los rostros amigables de los tibetanos me hizo sentir tan viva, tan presente, tan especial que ahora estando aca, me hace falta…este viaje me ayudo a comprender y a estar segura de lo que quiero hacer…ayudar al projimo, ese es mi destino y necesite de esto para poder estar segura que no me equivocaba en mis pensamientos…ahora solo tengo que hacerlo mi forma de vida y se que poco a poco lo llevare a cabo, sera en diferentes lugares, haciendo diferentes cosas, con diferentes costumbres, diferentes idiomas, pero con el mismo sentimiento, el de ayudar a los demas, porque ver su felicidad me hizo sentir feliz y ahora se que eso es lo quiero.
Doy mi agradecimiento a “Subir al Sur” y a “FSL India” por hacer de este voluntariado la experiencia mas importante de mi vida, a mi familia por apoyarme siempre en cada proyecto que intento hacer, a mis compañeros voluntarios por compartir sus vivencias, a mis amigos por apoyarme incondicionalmente y darme fuerzas para lograr esto tan importante en mi vida, a dios, que es mi guia y me acompañana en cada paso que doy….y a todos ustedes que lean esto les digo que lo mas importante es seguir el camino que elijan con el corazon, perseguir sus sueños y perseverar en la lucha por obterenlos… solo hay que animarse a cumplirlos!!!! mucha paz y amor para todas las personas del mundo….y no se olviden que ”ayudar a los demas es ayudarse a uno mismo”…

My Volunteering in DHARAMSALA, INDIA

Hello, my name is Yamila, I am from Argentina and this year in September I participated in n a workcamp in India thank you to “SUBIR AL SUR” I Could accomplish this dream which I have been waiting for such a long time….
I cannot express with words this Amazing experience, but I will try to make you feel part of what I felt in these places. After a long and tiring journey I finally arrived to Delhi where my friend Pía was waiting for me, it is with her that we started on this dream. Delhi… was impacting on all senses, the places, the colours, the smells, the people… we went about the part of the old city in a Rickshaw, where the mud roads were full of people walking along under a torrential rain, almost like it was a beautiful sunny day. Small half naked children asking for food, cows and dogs moving in the mountains of rubbish in the middle of the roads, and the smells from the foods stalls filled the air…. This was the impression which Delhi showed us in a few hours… we continued our travel to Dharamsala in a bus which seemed to come from another time.. Here we met with two girls who would be participating on the same Project as us, which made the never ending 14 hour journey less enduring.. The bus left us in a village called MCLEOD GANJ….a small village of Tibetan refugees, an incredible place, full of fresh and peaceful air something which I have never tried before. Once there, we met with the people from FSL India and with the rest of the volunteers. Our accommodation was in another village called … DHARAMKOT, higher up in the mountains, a charming place, with its little roads full of little flyers advertising yoga, Reiki, massages…”KRISHNA GUEST HOUSE” was our place during the 21 days of the Project… in the middle of the jungle, mountains and clouds… very closet o the sky… her ewe made ourselves comfortable, from our room we could see the immense countryside in front of us, and at night the starry sky looked like a painting fixed in the window..
GOUTHAM, The coordinator of the Group, started the presentation about FSL and then each one of us, the 20 volunteers from different countries, were presented, here they explained to us the activities which would start the next day early in the morning…
At 8:15 it was breakfast time, we all sat on pillows around a table sharing Chai tea, pancakes, porridge and fruit.. at 9h30 we started walking towards the school… a walk of about 25 minutes in the mountains topped with Tibetan prayer flags, the monkeys, cows and monks walked slowly with their coloured umbrellas … arriving there, the children, the teachers and the director of the school received us with smiles and surprise Could be seen in the happy faces of the children… next straight away we created a connection which cannot be explained though words, this connection which goes further than language, of the customs of the region and of religion… the connection of love and compassion, of wanting to give all waiting to feel and see the happiness in these people so different to us, but at the same time so much the same… through games, songs and dance we spent most of the day, whilst some planted trees, other cleaned the patio full of waste materials in order to start the remodelation of the classrooms of the small school… after lunch (rice, dal, chapati, vegetables) we left the children to study and we went to visit a Tibetan temple in Mcleod Ganj… at 19h30 it was dinner time and the daily meeting with the presentation of the countries of the people making up the voluntary Group . And so the days continued like this, helping the students with their English, sandpapering, and painting the classrooms which would be our small offering to these people so far from our occidental World. As we were from Thiers but learning together to share these worlds, and each day a great new experience and getting to know marvelous new places such as the cascades, the temples, the local artisanal, the carpet makers, the Gardens – all which belonged to their culture to be a little closer to the things we are not used to seeing, the most simple and beautiful things which I have never seen and to see them, feel them and understand them was something which opened our minds in the most natural way to this new World we were getting to know…
I have to say that it was more surprising than I had imagined, this experience went over and beyond my expectations, I found myself to be stronger and more open that I thought I was, from the first moment I felt good in the place, almost as if I had lived their all my life, I adapted to everything and so fast that all I had known before disappeared completely from my mind and from my customs, walking through those streets in Mcleod Ganj with the sound of the mantras which came out of the temples, the downfalls, the artisanal markets with the old local people selling blankets, the cows walking along with us, the Shell of Ginger tea and Honey, the friendly faces of the Tibetans, made me feel so alive, so present, so special that now being here, I am Messing it .. this journey helped me to understand and to be sure of what I want to do… to help others, this is my destiny, and I needed this to be sure that I wasn’t making any mistakes in my mind.. now I just have to make this part of my life and I know that bit by bit I will make this a reality, in different places, doing different things, with different cultures, different languages, but with the same feeling, that of helping others, because seeing their smiles makes me feel so happy and now I know this is what I want.
I give my thanks to Subir al Sur and FSL India for making this voluntary service the most important moment of my life, to my family for supporting me all ways in every Project I try to undertake, to my Bellow volunteers for sharing their experiences, to my friends for supporting my unconditionally and for giving me strength in order to accomplish this thing so important in my life, to God who is my guide and who accompanies me in each step I take… and to all of you who read this I would like to say that the most important thing is to continue your path which you have chosen with your heart, follow your dreams and keep the fight to achieve this… you just have to animate yourself to do this!!! Peace and love for all the people of the World.. and do not forget that "helping others is helping yourself” …

El intercambio cultural fue lo mejor que me gusto de esta experiencia porque conoces a personas que no son lo que parecen, y son todos geniales.
En esta experiencia aprendí mucho de todos, con Olivier aprendí sobre como se comporta el rio, como disminuir la velocidad del cause.
También quiero agradecer a subir al sur, Vicky, Sol por ayudarme en todo.
Desde el primer momento en que llegue hasta ahora que estamos al final del voluntariado me sentí genial, esto va a ser inolvidable.

Al fin el viaje esperado! Cuando íbamos llegando a Lux la C. en tren, mientras observaba los Alpes, todavía me sentía como en una sala de cine. Ese día comenzaba el campo de trabajo internacional en Vaunieres.
En la estación nos esperaba Olivier, uno de los coordinadores, que después por un camino sinuoso por el borde de la montaña llegamos a un pueblo muy antiguo (1846) donde existía una pequeña comunidad, con casas de piedra, fuente, taberna, espacios de huerta, una pequeña capilla y un cementerio.
En la misma actualmente se desarrollan actividades interculturales y sobre todo voluntariado, ya que por el mismo pasaron muchos jóvenes de todo el mundo que desde 1964 comenzaron la construcción del pueblo adaptándolo a nuevos requerimientos, talleres, espacios para teatro, espacios deportivos, etc.

El lugar es muy propicio ya que esta retirado de la "civilización" perdido entre gigantes montañas al costado de un río.
Fue el marco perfecto para la integración entre jóvenes; aprendizaje y desarrollos de workshops ya que la vida transcurría similar a un clan o tribu, organizada en colaboración y ayuda mutua. El trabajo de los Workshops y las caminatas sobre montañas hacían los días muy cortos e intensos, a la vez que a medida que pasaban los días íbamos conociéndonos todos los jóvenes tanto de Alemania, Rusia, Georgia, Francia, México, Bélgica.
La experiencia de hablar y conocer personas de otras culturas y costumbres es muy interesante ya que todos los chicos tenían una personalidad cualidad especial.
La integración y amistad que se logro en estas semanas fue intensa y estrecha, lo que se noto en el último día de cada voluntario.
Lo que me queda en la mente son los momentos vividos con todos los chicos, rostros sonrientes, miradas , acciones, predisposición para el entendimiento, voces, barullo, y sobre todo la campana que como un ritual nos avisaba la hora del encuentro, el dialogo y la reunión. Una experiencia que vale la pena repetir.

At last the long awaited travel!!! When we arrived in Lus La Croit Haute in train, whilst I looked at the Alps, I still felt as though I was in the cinema. This day the workcampstarted in Vaunieres.
In the station Olivier was waiting for us, one of the coordinators, after along a winding road along the edge of a mountain we arrived to an old village (1846) where a small community lived, in stone houses, a fountain, a pub, a vegetable garden, a small chapel and a cemetery. In this village currently there are intercultural activities which are developed and most of all voluntary service, Since 1964 many young people have passed by this place when they started the construction of the village adapting it to new requirements, workshops, space for a theatre, sports areas etc…
The place is very auspicious as it is away from “civilisation” lost in between giant mountains next to the river.
It was the great place for the integration between young people; learning and development of workshops, life went along similar to that of a clan or tribe, organising through collaboration and helping each other. The work of the workshops and the walks along the mountains made th adys short and intense, throughout these days we got to know young people from Germany, Russia, Georgia, Mexico and Belgium.
The experience of talking and getting to know people from other cultures is very interesting as all of the young people have a special kind of personality or quality.
The integration and friendship which was made during these weeks was intense and tight, which was seen in the last day in all the volunteers.
What was left in my mind was the vivid moments in all of the young people, smiling faces, looks, actions, predisposition for understanding, voices, uproar, and more than anything the sound of the bell which as a ritual told us when it was meeting time, dialogue and reunion. An experience which is worth repeating.

For me the best experience was the cultural Exchange, to get to know people from different countries and comunícate without words.
I learnt about ecology, the rivers of the mountains, and about quality of water.
Living together was an incredible exerience, to share each day with people from different places.

Fausto Aarya De Santis - a note from an ex volunteer's travel to Argentina

The captain announced "The weather along our journey has been reported to be good. The distance to our destination is 11,000km". A shiver went down my neck: this time I was really travelling far. The distance made me learn something new: don't think too healthy when you pre-order your flight meal: you may have to eat fish twice for breakfast and once for dinner within 24 hours.

I don't know if it was good karma or that my father woke up on the right side of the bed (though that could also be counted as karma)... but one morning this May, he came up to me wondering if I wanted to volunteer somewhere around the world. "No, no and no... why do you think it is just that! It is not true... it is not the south American women the ONLY reason for me to volunteer in the southern hemisphere" ... let me try phrasing it better. It is to the end of my personal desire of understanding cultures and people, that i could not refuse the opportunity of being part of the celebration of the 100 years of a rural town in the northern platos of Argentina. What better way to know a culture if not though celebration. "We must dance more together" to create a better understanding between cultures, told me Bernhard Haoper, a very composed white haired german agronomist, in an interview some months back. Can it be true? Does dancing bring us closer? Do we for a moment stop thinking too much from our categorical mind and let our more spontaneous heart express freely and intimately?

It is strange how when we travel to these 'so called' unstable and developing social and economic destinations – which are still unknown to us – we carry this strange fear. I can only imagine what travelers to India must feels like when they get baptized and are introduced to their dreamy mystical land by our taxi drivers and paharganj touts. Even by trying to erase my blackboard of fears and the 10 year in India... I failed. "What if I get robed at gun point?" "Well, if I survive that, it'll be an experience... and it shall become a new story to tell " was my excuse to smile at the thought..

Little did I know that I would find a landscape which reminded me of Finland when I took the local bus from the airport. The air so cold and so clean, the grass so green, the trees so naked, the land so vast, the houses so cute with their gardens and the road so ordered!!!???!!! ... No, I did not get that wrong, I was as puzzled as you might be right now. And more puzzled when, if going a little back in time, I found myself at the airport without a clue of where I had to go. I had lost the print out with the hostel name, address and direction and the internet at the airport was in no mood to be collaborative. So after much contemplation and self abuse I bought a map and asked for the bus which would lead me around the area I thought my bed was awaiting me... which I did find after a 2 hour bus ride, an espresso with chocolate, some invented Spanish and the blessed Wi-Fi.

Have you ever felt the desire to warmly welcome a traveler to your country? If you have or haven't... try thinking how would you welcome this unknown traveler to your culture, your people and your country?

I don't think I've ever been so warm and spontaneous in all my life to randomly go up to a traveler from far lands and welcome her with an open hear... but I can tell you that it is one of the warmest embrace of welcome a traveler can wish for. I was trying to get lost among the never ending straight streets of Buenos Aires, when my eyes fell on a passionate, beautiful and sensual street dancing tango. I know, street tango... that's....! (use whoever word can best describe the feeling for you, for awesome, legendary are just not enough!) In between these turns, twisting legs, fired eyes, beautiful legs, the dancer announced the land I came from as I gave the tip. "You are from India??!!??" and as I turned to nod, I saw a random, surprised, intrigued and amazed man... who as soon as I finished my nod welcome-kissed me to Argentina... and some part of my heart knew that it now belonged to Argentina.

I find it very ironical how in a world where most young men are proud to count the women they have been with – the number being directly proportional to coolness – and the young ladies are divided between their feminist approach to equality – "if men can do it, we can too!" – and their everlasting romantic idea of the ideal one man... think that the best way to HIT on the other sex is at clubs and pubs where everyone is a bit tipsy. It just confuses the unscrewed bolt in my head when I think that these are catwalks where coolness means the capacity of spending and being loud, where dance is without words, where men believe machismo attracts the ladies and where the less you care the more superior you believe to be... are these really the best spaces?Or am I in complete delusion when I say that a tango bar (like the one we went to in Buenos Aires ), where sexiness is measured in the capacity of leading and following, where respect is given to courteousness and humility, where courage is seen as the capacity to invite, where the ladies seduce by hiding but yet revealing their skin, where attraction is created by the capacity to intrigue and where emotions are conveyed though eyes and lips... will give you far better chances???!!??

Somehow I think we have forgotten e aesthetics of dance and why we dance, whichever may be the style... from jumping around at pubs up to wavy trance.

I know, what happened to the volunteering? This is all part of it, just not yet in the labor field. I must say that when I was first told that I was going to be the only male volunteer, I did not know if to cry or to have a huge smile on my face... somehow both came simultaneously. To the surprise of my strange expression I ended up having other male companions. Balaraam, with Brazilian looks and typical British character, he was my official miss-interpreter. No, he is neither an Indian, nor is he a Red Indian with an Indian name (ok, I know, they live in North America... but the thought of it was just awesome – sorry, Bala!). The boy nearly got my hair cut like a baseball hat and totally twisted my words to a local girl... which if I was in India, would have led to me running for my life with her brother hunting me down with an axe. Emanuel was the other male volunteer. Our Argentinean socialist stud, he wants to do a research on different cultures by comparing their meat consumption per capita. I know; what a great idea. Somehow I just never related meat consumption to explain and understand cultures; but if I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. Be sure that I shall be reading that enquiry as soon as it is done. By the by, did you know Argentineans are the biggest meat eaters in the world? I mean, the guys consume over a 100kg a year, out of which 70 of beef... my apologies to some of my Indian friends who might find this offensive and to everyone's digestive and heart system.

The unlucky girls who had to face our group at first were Regina; with her beautiful voice and cute smile, who didn't only have to bear with my blabery mouth but also with me asking her to dance whenever she was around... and Sol, with her passionate tango blood, beautiful presence and my first mate companion.

In introducing us to the project and the activities, they brought me back to what I would imagine my kindergarten days must have been like – ending the school with sticky hands, painted floor, horrible drawings accompanied with lots of spontaneity, innocence and laughter. It's great to be a child sometimes, somehow I always forget the one hiding in me.

All spoken about, but really... what are we here for? The town where we will be working, Villa Ana, was started by La Forestal, a British and German company. The company had land rights over a huge forest area after the failure of the province to repay a loan to the two governments. This region, in the north of Argentina, was a forest of Quebracho: a local tree. The tree, after being at least 100 years old is a great source for tannin – a compound used to make leather dye which also has the property of making the leather more flexible. Like most such stories, the forest was exploited till the very last trees during the two world wars – how can we forget, soldiers are full of leather gears – and around 1960, after all the trees were used to help the great British and German soldiers (enemy at war but business companions in producing leather die ) ... the company left. The people were left without the prime resource of their land, to somehow create a new economy to sustain themselves.

With the desire to learn the struggle, challenges, hopes and the story of the people from Villa Anna, I adventured on our 13hr bus ride from Buenos Aires with my volunteer companions... and what a ride, the road had no bumps and one could actually sleep well on those (very) reclining seats.

The road ended where our journey ended, it really felt like being at the end of one of the world's corners. Very much convinced that we were not still there, yes... how can u not know you've reached when the very road you are on is over... we heard two blonde British ladies shouting. Vicky, the coordinator of the Subir al Sur, and Lucy, our facilitator with the heavy task of bearing these 9 volunteers- full of their 'feel good factor' – "We are coming to help!".

Somehow... with some strange coincidence... people who have an inclination to the social world have some link with India. Maybe it is the relation of marijuana with youth who want to think out of the box or India's capacity to make people think without the plant... but either way, Vicky had lost her brother to some Himalayan mountain where he is still hiding and Lucy adventured there many times. Once the India link is established, one is sure to have some interesting conversations... and that was the case for the next 2 weeks.

I'm sure each one of us has an opinion of chest hair. With a book in my hand, my back resting on a tree trunk, the winter sun warming my body, and the 'Mate' circulating, I was in Argentinean bliss... when suddenly I was assaulted. My polo shirt button was opened and a camera suddenly closed its shutter on my chest hair. Without having the time to process what just happened and terribly confused by the thoughts which came to my mind, I saw our cute Korean girls with a big grin looking at the picture just taken. Jihye and Mona (I love it when they have an English name to make life simple for us ignorant westerners) did not stop smiling for quite some time and then came to ask me if they could touch my chest hair. I know, wtf? Or I guess it is all just part of our cultural shocks. Supposedly Korean women love chest hair. Jihye is a the tall athlete who defeated me at the Chicken fight (oohh, I so love Korean games) and Mona was as perfect a Korean doll, as perfect as you can imagine. Both of them were skinny and with the hobby of dieting every second dinner. But there was something so innocent, so simple, so childlike and so funny about how they went about the whole chest hair and beard thing that saying 'no' was something which never came to and I had fun being their hairy guiny pig. Keep that innocence alive Jihye and Mona

Culture shocks will always remain, and some, I guess are just too difficult to digest. When Flor, our second facilitator, randomly woke up one evening and decided that after our siesta we would give each other a shower to wake us up. "I know we have after siesta wake up games... but a shower?" I did not hear wrong, we had to give a shower with no water, no soap, no towel... a shower where one person had to imagine such things existed and carry out the act of bathing the

Something just too difficult for my mind to take, it was Doctor Doctor taken to a whole new level... a level I so enjoyed watching but I could just not have myself doing it to a girl. I would feel just too sleazy each time my hand was going over her, and then my sleazy smile would have never stopped appearing on my face for the whole bathing time... forgetting about when she would have had to bathe me.

Each morning, to warm up our bloods we had exercise. Each one of us invented one exercise which the rest performed. Everyday a pair had morning duties of breakfast and lunch and a different pair for snack and dinner. The rest of us were busy painting, breaking stones, playing with kids and breaking the floor of the mess. No, we did not leave the poor kids without a floor... we made a new one; so if any of you want a new floor, I can do that . I never knew that breaking a floor was something I had always wanted to do.

Eating, working, dancing, playing, laughing, singing, cooking, inventing Spanish, interacting... and days went pass by. Among us there were four other volunteers. Marlene, who from one angle looked the cute girl next door and from the other the cunning French women; Anne, also from France, with her cute dimple which I guess made all her students love her; Isabel, from Madrid, was my other official interpreter and a much more reliable one... thank you for all the extra chatting I made you do. Taking the anti-sun-rising order, just for the final introduction, we had the girl who said the most 'thank you' and 'sorry' I've ever heard and will ever hear in 14 days. Narumi came the land of the rising sun; with one of the cutes smiles and best massage hands I know of... after our ways separated the world seemed so much less thankful to me

The local youth group we were working and interacting with were the Quebrachitos – their name tacking inspiration from the tree they saw disappearing from their lands. With around 20 members ranging from 14 to around 30, they really made me understand how important is the capacity to formulate a vision in creating social harmony. Coming from different economic backgrounds, with many of them interested in history, it was very interesting to see how the human psyche becomes much more active and constructive when instead of rejecting and forgetting the past, you try to understand it and then challenge the present. Forgetting is easy... embracing the past to mould the present and shape the future is not. It requires the capacity to find a harmony in confusion; a confusion caused by all your mixed feelings, external opinions, present struggles and some anger towards those who took your resources away.

Anger, revenge, frustrations do not ever disappear or fade away when we act passively on it – when we try to forget, think it never happened. The past never fades, it the very reason for our present to be the way it is. The only decision we have in this moment is how we incorporate this past in us; and if this is done constructively with your mind and heart being aware, active and ready to mould the present... then anger, revenge, frustrations can be great source for change. A change not based on destroying the past, but on a healthier incorporation of the past. How can anger change is love? "By dancing more together'... or in other words: by working on our mutual beliefs, on our inner desires. When we challenge our revenge, when we analyze our anger, when we understand our frustration... we turn from a passive view of life to an active way of living. This is what I feel this youth group has been able to achieve in formulating their vision.

Some people wonder why I don't live in developed countries, my answer is because the youth has no vision. What do you do with money if you have no vision on how to use that money? When you have health but no desire to move out of your house? When you have schools but no motivation to learn? I live to see and to hope others make me see things I would not have seen otherwise... but if people around me don't want to see then I rather close my eyes.

Separating music from South Americans is like separating oxygen from living beings. With this eternal sky, grass fields till where your eye could see, horses ridden on the mud floors... each morning felt like a movie scene when we were woken up by our next door bursting music at 7am. Poverty is so different around the world. In India they might not have the money to send their children to school, but they will make sure that at least 200 people come to their daughter's marriage. In Argentina, be sure that their house may be of mud... but they will have the most awesome of music systems; a system that I'm sure most of the people I know don't have, me included.

The town even had their own discotheque – the boliche. Open only on Saturdays and beginning by 11pm, we were lucky enough to be there twice till around 5am. With too much Cumbia and Regeton... but none of it mattered too much after the 700ml glasses of beer they had, my main objective of the night would become to get a girl for Emanuel and saving my ass from Bala's miss-interpretations. It was somewhere in between the first night at the club that I decided I wanted a haircut. High enough I spotted Angie, and with my faithful interpreter Isabel I went up to her. Angie, a tall blond hair Hermaphrodite (this is what I was told, but I'm not aware if humans can be hermaphrodite), she was supposed to be a great hair stylist; at least that is what some reliable sources had told me. So there I was, ready for the coming Monday to have a haircut by Angie. All exited as 7pm was approaching on Monday, I even washed myself with cold water to be on clean and ready... I was left waiting and waiting... to finally accept that I had been ditched

The 100 year celebration was celebrating a new beginning for the town – an ecstasy of music to bring people closer and mutually believe in the re-flowering of their town. Celebrating in the very factory which created the town, with these history telling bricks at the background, they were getting ready to prepare a meal for 4000 people. Never in my life have I seen so much meat... enough to make me feel horribly repulsed by it and awesomely happy at the same time. Seventeen (unholy) cows had been donated for two dishes: Lomo, a 12 hour cooked meat with lentils, and Assado, their barbeque. Eating was not easy that day... too little space to store all that the eye wanted. It was unbelievably delicious. I collapsed on the green fields of the factory for 4 hours after the 'free' lunch offered by the town.

The two nights of festivities were full of various artists who made the whole town dance, mostly at Cumbia. With these passionate musicians on the stage, the men with their hats on and leading the way for the ladies in their long skirts who beautifully followed them, it was a candy to my eye. I think in India we lack of these social festivities; we are more introverted... we don't always let our heart speak... we worry too much about the 'Shoulds' in life – a confusion, I think, caused by our miss-understanding of Dharma, as dad would say. Music is to Latinos what movies are to Indians – both take them away from the daily struggles of life. Bollywood films are full of songs but somehow we don't transfer these songs from the realm of movies to social dancing festivity. Dance is seen something to watch in India: Not only we don't have community dances but we also see them as something a bit taboo. We must always have control over ourselves; never let ourselves be too loose... too un-controlled.

It is very important to have an introvert and disciplined aspect of the self, but it equally important to let our more spontaneous and fun-loving aspects of us flourish. It is important have the capability of enjoying.

As we danced more, drank more, worked more, we also approached our departure date. On our last day each one of us had to write something about the other volunteers and an evaluation form to be left with the organization. Not all of us were going back to Buenos Aires; the lucky ones with t
It was incredible how the Quebrachitos bid us farewell. They came with a pick-up jeep which had half of its back space occupied by speakers. All our bags were thrown into it and we walked with the jeep moving at our pace, loud Spanish music playing, emergency blinkers on and all of us walking behind it on those eternal pampas. It was the perfect end to our small two week movie, the only thing which I did not see were the credits appearing in front of me, but clearly visible in my mind. The end of film emotions were waving in the air, people were hugging, tears were caressing some cheeks, some other eyes were wet but restraining the drop from falling and everyone's sadness for the departure was embraced with the smiles of the adventure lived together.

We all get so fascinated when new media enables some interesting events to occur. Like WIkileacks with the US confidential files or with a political scandal through tweets. It was not different when Narumi lost her passport. Wanting to go to Uruguay for a day, as soon as we reached Buenos Aires, Narumi and I ventured out to find tickets. With all the information in hand, we got back to the hostel, packed our bags, got out of the hostel. "Wait, I think I left my passport" whispered Narumi with her soft voice. Thinking it'll be a matter of two minutes, Bala and I decided to wait for her on the street. Gone were the sunny winter days of Villa Anna. We were in bloody Argentinian winter. Not seeing her coming out and freezing outside, we decided to go back in to find Narumi quite sure to have lost her passport somewhere during our ticket search in the morning. With no possibility of getting anywhere out of Argentina we went to the Japanese embassy... where we heard more 'thank yous' in one hour than in our two weeks with Narumi. With a flight to catch the day after and with the hope of getting a new passport within a day, we went out for some steaks at night.

Night fell and the sun gave light for a new day and a facebook message. Guess what, some girl had found Narumi's passport on a bus... typed her name on facebook and viola, the linked was established! Still think you are too cool to be on facebook?

Narumi left us for Chile a day before I also left for the same country. Bala was on his way to Peru a few yours after my departure. Why Chile? Well, if you have a friend studying there and a cheap air ticket and it's a new country, a new culture to know more about... why not! Being the longest country in the world with 4300km and just 200km wide, Chile has the driest desert on earth in the north, with only 0.2mm of rain a year, very fertile land around the Santiago region and the beautiful Patagonia in the south, which is also one of the most fish rich regions in the world. Did you know 30% of the world's fish comes from there? Chile is also the richest South American country and it has a huge German ancestry. Something else I had no clue about... but it surely explained the very ordered traffic.

Without my directions (AGAIN! ... though they were with me till the airport), I reached the metro station which I remembered reading in the instructions – Pedro de Valvidia. With my map in hand to understand which exit I should take, I hear "there you are!". Surprised to hear some English, I automatically look up to find my living map was in front of me. Shivani is the only person who has ever come from India to study in Chile... interesting. Most Chilean were just clueless about India but much more creative in their questions.. A part of the usual, do you speak Indian questions, they asked her if she has a pet elephant .

Vegetables were the only thing I could think of eating that night. There was enough meat in my system to keep me meat-less for a very long time – not that I would actually stay without meat for so long, but if left with no choice, I could survive. With some good Chilean wine, an invented risotto I slept like a baby that night.

Not having time to see much, I decided to keep one day for Santiago and one for Valparaiso, both very interesting. Valparaiso is two hours from Santiago and it is a port town with very Bohemia style architecture. Full of interesting graffiti, Valparaiso is a UNESCO protected town and the town where I had my first raw sea muscles of various types. In trying to get lost in the town, I found myself in the main fish market. With all kind of fish being sold, my eyes caught attention on this old couple having muscles with lemon and with each bite I saw the faces smiling. The temptation was too much... I had to try! I'll admit it... the bites were not easy but surely interesting.

The situation was completely different but the conclusion the same when I walked around Santiago. With most shops closed and hunger summoning me after the 4 hour of walk, I saw this nice coffee shop. As I walked towards it I saw a very nice pair of legs inside, then I saw 3 more pairs with the same dress. I had to go in! Cafè con Pernhas – coffee with legs – is a great concept I've only discovered recently. There are only girls serving, all of them wearing short skirts with their nice legs at full view for the clients to view. They come to you slowly with their hips moving, ask you for your order, they turn around and walk back in the same way... just this time you see more the movement. Once ready they come back to you and with a nice smile leave your coffee on the table. How great is that! These are not un-respected places. They are very respected places where a lot of people go... then of course you have the ones which are a little less respectable... but still they maintain a certain degree of respect.

My flight back to Buenos Aires was 1 day before I had to leave for Italy. With the most clear sky over the Andes, I realized how much of a crime it is to fly over them. It is doing injustice to them... they are made to travel by road, not by sky!

With my fist journey to the South America soil and with the desire to live some part of my short life in those lands, I left Buenos Aires on the 19th of July. I've seen many skies in my life but there was something so magical about the beauty of the Argentina sky. The clouds we low, well formed but scattered, leaving large spaces for the sun to shine its rays. The sun rise and sun set would not just color the sky around them but all of the sky which was below the cloud formation at 360 degrees around you. I cannot explain if it was the vastness of the land, the low and scattered could formation, the different sky of the southern hemisphere or my changed perception... but the there was magic in that sky that I felt was changing in accordance to my emotions. With a part of my heart leaving its new home, the sky wetting the lands with its tears, my personal desire to return one day and maybe have the gun point story one day... my long flight back took off.

5 Argentines in Europe- 5 Argentinos en Europa

Gracias a los gestiones de Solidarites Jeunesses nuestros socios en Francia a través de financiamiento del OFAJ (oficina Franco- Alemán para la juventud), el fondo de solidaridad de CCIVS (comité de coordinación del servicio voluntariado internacional) y Solidarites Jeunesses, viajarán 5 jóvenes de Argentina para participar en un proyecto de voluntariado en los Alpes franceses desde el 1 al 17 de septiembre, el proyecto se desarrollará en una aldea y los voluntarios trabajaran sobre asuntos ecológicos incluyendo la limpieza de un río y construcción de baños ecológicos. Pronto enviaremos más informaciones sobre la experiencia de los participantes y que actividades van estar desarrollando.

Thanks to the efforts of our partners Solidarités Jeunesses France through funding from OFAJ (Franco-German office for youth), the Solidarity Fund of CCIVS (Coordinating Committee for International Voluntary Service) and Solidarités Jeunesses, five young Argentines will travel to participate in a voluntary project in the French Alps from 1 to 17 September, the project will be conducted in a hamlet and the volunteers will work on environmental issues including the cleaning of a river and construction of ecological toilets. We will be sending more information on the experience of the participants and what activities will be developed.

Subir al Sur has a new EVS (European Voluntary Service) volunteer arrived from Concordia UK with funding from the Youth in action Program of the Youth Forum Jeunesse. His name is Jacob and he is participating with our local Partners Quebrachito in our dear village of Villa Ana in the North of Santa Fe. Jacob will stay until mid February and will be teaching English to the local community, and in a rural school, he will also support Quebrachito in their vegetable garden, on their radio program and with their Cinema Nights. In addition to this he would like to create a percussion Group and support Quebrachito with their work on Bio construction. Welcome Jake!

Su nombre es Jacob y está participando con nuestros socios locales Quebrachtio en nuestro querido pueblo de Villa Ana, en el norte de Santa fe. The methodology of Subir al Sur’s intercultural encounters together with our local partenrs are called just this as we consider that the word workcamp does not fully transmit what we are aiming to achieve through our work in the field of International Voluntary Service.

Our Intercultural Encounters are created in order that the volunteer may learn the most possible about the hosting project and Subir al Sur, that they may learn new techniques of working, communicating, learn about new cultures and their costumes, learn important information about specific topics which we run during the encounters, such as: Ecology and Food Sovereignty, Human Rights, The history of Exploitation in Latin America and the hosting Project etc etc..

During the encounter the day is divided into community work, and in the evening different intercultural activities are organised. This can simply be a game with the local hosting community, youth Group and volunteers, to a detailed presentation of culture, an evening focusing on stereotypes and trying to treat these images, a film debate, a musical night, and of course some valuable free time nights!

The weekends generally focus on the mid and final evalorations (putting the emphasis on the value of the Exchange), community work, preparing of the final festival/event and a

an outing – maybe to the countryside where the volunteers can have a stronger connection ton ature, or maybe to a nearby farm where the volunteers can earn about alternative methods of production.

In the organisation of these encounters we have a referent who travels to the local Project and follows the development of the Project with the Local Youth Group. There is a Subir al Sur facilitator training and prior travel of the selected facilitators to the local Project in order to get to know the group- the facilitators guide the International volunteers, and aide the Communications between the local and International Group. The Local Youth Group are charged with the technical coordination of the work, and at the end of the Project we have a member of Subir al Sur travel to evalorate the experience between the Local Youth Group and the facilitators and the relationship between the facilitators themselves.

La metodología de los encuentros interculturales de Subir al Sur desarrollados en conjuntos con nuestros socios locales, se llaman así porque consideramos que la palabra “campo de trabajo” no nos permite transmitir lo que queremos lograr a través de nuestro trabajo en el mundo de servicio voluntario internacional.

Creamos los encuentros interculturales para que los voluntarios pueden aprender todo lo posible sobre el proyecto que recibe al voluntario y sobre Subir al Sur, para que pueden aprender nuevas técnicas de trabajar, comunicar, aprender sobre nuevas culturas y las costumbres de las comunidades, aprender información importante sobre temáticas específicas que desarrollamos durante los encuentros, como: Ecología y soberanía alimentaria, derechos humanos, la historia de la explotación en America Latina y el proyecto de acogida.

Durante el encuentro el día se divide en trabajo comunitario, y por las noches organizamos diferentes actividades interculturales. Este puede ser simplemente un juego con la comunidad local, el grupo juvenil y los voluntarios, una presentación detallada sobre cultura, una noche trabajando los estereotipos, un cine debate, una noche musical, y por supuesto, algunas noches libres para el descanso!

Los fines de semana se enfocan sobre las evaloraciones de medio tiempo y final (poniendo el énfasis sobre el intercambio), trabajo comunitario, preparación para el evento final/festival y una salida al aire libre donde los voluntarios puedan tener una conexión mas fuerte con la naturaleza, o hacia una granja cercana en donde los voluntarios puedan aprender sobre métodos alternativos de producción.

En la organización de estos encuentros tenemos una referente que viaja al proyecto local y quien sigue el proceso y desarrollo del proyecto con el Grupo de Jóvenes Locales. Hay una preparación de facilitadores Subir al Sur y viajes de los facilitadores anterior al proyecto para conocer el grupo de jóvenes locales y conocer el lugar del encuentro. Los facilitadores guían al grupo internacional y facilitan la comunicación entre los voluntarios internacionales y el grupo de jóvenes locales.

El grupo de jóvenes locales se encargan de la coordinación técnica del proyecto, y al fin del proyecto viaja un miembro de Subir al sur para evalorar la experiencia entre el grupo juvenil y los facilitadores y la relación entre los facilitadores mismos.

The completion of the community canteen was finished in time for it´s inaugaration on the first evening of the 2 day long centennial festivities. A large crowd of people from the village and the press gathered for the occasion.

Both volunteers and the women from the community made a big effort in the final days to get all the major things done like the new floor and outside mud stove with chimney. There was time also to do final touches such as fun paintings on the outside walls and colorful designs painted on recycled tyres as well as transplanting plant cuttings along the walkways. The result was appreciated and admired by everyone.

The Project truly served to bring the Workgroup, local community and volunteers together not just in work but in also cooking together in the evenings, watching a film in the open air, playing games until late in the evening. An inauguration of the canteen with everyone who participated took place on the final night of the volunteers stay.

A sense of the village community beyond the local neighbour was marked by the wonderfully warm day spent eating locro prepared over an open fire in the largest saucepans ever seen, enough to feed 5000 villagers and others present!. The feast also included barbecue cow cooked traditionally. The sight of which was nothing less than spectacular, not to mention mouth watering! Dancing went on until the early hours of the morning and featured bands from the Villa Ana, the province and also Buenos Aires.

Helping out and participating in such a special occasion added a wonderful dimension for all involved. Not one that will be repeated for another 100 years at least!

El proyecto del comedor fue finalizado a tiempo para su inauguración en la primer tarde de dos días de festejo del centenario de la localidad. Gran cantidad de pobladores y la prensa asistieron para la ocasión.

Los voluntarios y las mujeres hicieron un esfuerzo inmenso en los últimos días para terminar con todas las cosas planificadas, como el nuevo piso y el horno de barro con chimenea que se encuentra en el exterior y es utilizado para cocinar a los niños que asisten al almuerzo. Hubo tiempo además para hacer unos arreglos finales como pintar las paredes exteriores e interiores y hacer unos coloridos y divertidos dibujos en ellas, como así también transplantar plantas a lo largo de un camino que lleva a un muro con el nombre de la plaza. El resultado final fue apreciado y admirado por todos.

El proyecto sirvió verdaderamente para acercar a todo el grupo de trabajo, comunidad local y voluntarios, no sólo en el trabajo, sino también cocinando juntos en las noches, mirando una película al aire libre, jugando hasta tarde, etc. La inauguración del comedor entre todos los que participaron fue la noche final de la estadía de los voluntarios, compartiendo un rico guiso de lentejas.

La calidez de la comunidad local fue fortalecida por un maravilloso y cálido día comiendo locro preparado en un fuego al aire libre en enormes ollas jamás vistas, suficientes como para alimentar a 5000 personas, entre ellas pobladores y otros visitantes. El almuerzo también incluía asado de vaca, el cual fue cocinado de manera tradicional. La vista de esto fue espectacular, mencionando a su vez las ganas feroces de devorar los platos elaborados por las cocineras. A la noche hubo baile que siguió hasta las primeras horas de la madrugada ambos días con bandas de Villa Ana, la provincia, Buenos Aires y otros lados.
Ayudar y participar en tan especial ocasión adicionó una dimensión maravillosa a la experiencia de todos los involucrados, que no podrá repetirse por otros cien años al menos…

Updates: Encuentro Intercultural 2010/ workcamp 2010

The objective of The Quebrachitos and Subir al Sur is the repair of the a very run down canteen community facility in one of the poorest neighbourhoods. It incLudes painting the inside and outside, remaking the floor and building a new stove.
The first days were spent with the Quebrachitos and the Subir al Sur team introducing ourselves and they presented us to the local neighbourhood where we are living and working. Servings of extra tasty mate were enjoyed with women´s group in charge of cooking for the communities children in the canteen area twice a day in.
We were surprised to encounter the local tv and radio press in our formal introduction to the mayor of the village as well as the members of the 100 years celebration committee. However the atmosphere was decidedly fun and light humoured once the all the volunteers joined in folkloric dancing practice to be shown as part of the 100 year celebrations on the public holiday on the 9th July. It put a spring in the step of the villagers too to have so many nationalities present!
The Quebrachitos gave us a historic tour including highlights like the factory. Meanwhile back in the local area we experienced local highlights like torta frita (like deep fried pancake).
We have been supported with bread donations and been able to buy fresh organic produce from the neighbourhood. We have also had the pleasure of arriving in prime grapefruit time……there are more fruit trees with fruits than we know what to do with.
Every afternoon we finish with different games. There is a football field that occupies the area around the community canteen. There are many funny moments shared with the community, whilst working on the various tasks repairing the canteen building
From time to time the local children (of all ages up to 13 years old) lead the volunteers to the football pitch to play or shout a “Gooaal”. Everyone plays together and they came motivated to shared with the volunteers and Quebrachitos. Some of children arrive once school has finished, to help with the tasks, mostly painting.
Between gloves, brushes, wheelbarrows and spades we have started the dream of repairing the conditions of the building. We work six hours every day with the help of “mates” prepared by the kitchen`s chefs and the help of the neighbors.

El objetivo de Quebrachito y Subir al Sur es reparar el comedor del Barrio Sur, por eso lo estamos pintando por dentro y fuera, arreglado el piso y construyendo una cocina.
Los primeros dias lo pasamos barbaro con el grupo de trabajo Quebrachitos y el equipo de Subir al Sur, quienes nos presentaron a la communidad del barrio donde viviriamos y trabajariamos. Las mujeres alli nos sirvieron mate muy rico mientras reiamos y hablabamos con ellas que estan encargadas de la cocina y proveen comidas dos veces diarios para los chicos del barrio en dicho comedor. Todos son muy hospitalarios y simpaticos con nosotros.
Nos soprendio cuando llego inesperadamente la prensa local del radio y TV a la presentacion formal de los voluntarios al superintendiente y los miembros de la Comision de Festejos de 100 anos desde la fundacion del pueblo, que va a cumplir y celebrar este 9 de Julio.
Aunque el encuentro parecia formal el ambiente se convirtio en algo mas divertido y liviano cuando nos invitaron a bailar una danza local como parte de las preparaciones para el festejo del 9 julio. Se animo mucho la gente local por tener tantas nacionalidades practicando con ellos!
Entre las horas de trabajo los Quebrachitos nos dieron un tour historico de los puntos mas destacados que representan su historia, como la fabrica. Tambien neexperimentamos los sabores del arte culinario local como la famosa torta frita!!
La gente del barrio nos apoya con donaciones de pan casero y podemos comprar verduras frescas y organicas diariamente. Tuvimos mucha suerte en llegar en la epoca de maduracion de los pomelos. Estan caidos en todos lados, esperando que los exprimamos para jugo….
Cada tarde culmina con distintos juegos, la pelota ocupa el predio de alrededor del comedor y la tareas de los voluntarios vinculadas a la reparación y pintura paran para dar lugar a momentos de risas con los niños del Barrio Sur, de la mano de los voluntarios los niños corren para escapar de la Mancha o gritar un gol. Los pequeños son de distintas edades desde tres años hasta trece o más y vienen motivados a compartir entre ellos, con los voluntarios y los Quebrachitos. Algunos llegan temprano para ayudar con las tareas, principalmente con la pintura.
Entre guantes, palas, carretillas, pinceles y martillos empezamos el sueño de adecuar las condiciones edilicias del comedor. Contribuimos con el trabajo seis horas por día con la ayuda de los vecinos y los mates de las cocineras.

Workcamp 2010/ Encuentro Intercultural 2010

This year’s intercultural encounter (workcamp) is about to start in the locality of Villa Ana, province of Santa Fe, Argentina. The Project together with the youth group Quebrachito is being run in the mark of the 100 year celebrations of the village which was founded by the British Forestal Land Company and in an odd twist for the first time this year we will have up to five British volunteers participating on the project during the year!
There are 8 international volunteers taking part from Italy, France, Korea, Japan, UK and Spain, and 2 local volunteers from the youth group Agrupación I.D.E.A.S, Reconquista. The project will be facilitated for Subir al Sur by Flor (Argentina) and Lucy (UK), the youth group Quebrachito lead the technical coordination.
Subir al Sur is VERY happy to be able to be part of the 100 year celebrations of Villa Ana and to start our 5th project together with Quebrachito in the village. The volunteers will help out in the preparations for the 100 years on the 9th of July and will reconstruct a children’s soup kitchen in an impoverished neighbourhood amongst other projects.

El encuentro intercultural de esta año esta por empezar en la localidad de Villa Ana provincia de Santa Fe, argentina. El proyecto se desarrollara en conjunto con el grupo juvenil Quebrachito en el marco de la celebración del centenario del pueblo, que fue fundado por la empresa británica Forestal Land Company, lo cual para nosotros será un evento extraño contar con 5 voluntarios británicos, ya que, es la primera vez que recibimos tantos voluntarios británicos.
Hay 8 voluntarios internacionales proviniendo de diferentes lugares, Italia, Francia, Corea, Japón, Gran Bretaña y España, también llegaran dos voluntarios del grupo juvenil Agrupación I.D.E.A.S de la ciudad de Reconquista que participaran en el proyecto que facilitaran Flor (Argentina) y Lucy (Reino Unido) de la ONG Subir al Sur. Teniendo la coordinación técnica del proyecto la organización local Quebrachito.
Subir al Sur esta muy contenta de ser parte de la celebración de los cien años del pueblo de Villa Ana, y de empezar el quinto proyecto en conjunto con Quebrachito. Los voluntarios ayudaran con los preparativos para los festejos de los cien años del pueblo que se realizara el 9 de Julio y restauraran un comedor infantil en un barrio carenciado, adentro de otros proyectos.

Llego Niki una voluntaria Británica a través de Concordia UK con la programa de juventud del Unión Europea (Servicio Voluntariado Europea). Niki quedará 8 meses en la localidad de Clorinda en la provincia de Formosa desarrollando un proyecto con nuestros socios locales Eco Clubes Clorinda. Niki pasó sus primeros días en la Argentina en la nueva oficina de Subir al Sur en Villa Ana, en donde la preparamos para su experiencia e invitamos al Grupo Juvenil Quebrachito de hacer una presentación de su proyecto y ofreciendo además una visita guiada del pueblo.

Niki a British volunteer has arrived through Concordia UK participating in the Youth Program and the European Union (European Voluntary Service). Niki will stay for 8 months in the locality of Clorinda in the province of Formosa developing a project with our local Partners Eco Clubes Clorinda. Subir al Sur tiene una nueva oficina en el pueblo de Villa Ana, provincia de Santa Fe. Es una casa histórica de casi 80 años, con un estilo de arquitectura hermosa y única. Estamos muy felices de poder tener nuestro propio espacio y especialmente de estar en el pueblo de Villa Ana en este año importante – los festejos de los 100 años de vida del pueblo, hecho por una empresa Británica. Seguramente durante los festejos el 9 de julio la casa va estar llena de amigos visitando a Subir al Sur y nuestro querido pueblo de Villa Ana.

Subir al Sur has a new office in the village of Villa Ana, province of Santa Fe. It is a historic house in the village which was made approximately 80 years ago, with a beautiful style of architecture unique to the village. We are very happy to be able to have our own space and especially to be in the village of Villa Ana in this an important year – the 100 year celebrations of the village which was made by a British Tannin company. We can be sure that during the celebrations on the 9th of July the house will be full of friends visiting Subir al Sur and our dear village of Villa Ana.

Project:
The youth group for community action “Quebrachito” are developing several actions which commemorate this important year. Argentina is going towards it’s bicentenary; the 25 May and will celebrate 200 years as a nation and Villa Ana is going to celebrate its centenary; on the 9 July it will celebrate 100 years as a village. For this reason together with Subir al Sur and the community of Villa Ana we will develop from the 26 June until the 11 of July a project which has the objective of working on activities related and forming part of the festivities on the route to the birthday of the village.
The history and the development of a small village such as Villa Ana goes back exactly 100 years and was in the hands of a British company which exploited the North East of Argentina for a tree called Quebracho from which they extracted a substance called tannin. The community of Villa Ana is characterized by its history and for the painful memories of usurpation and robbery.
The youth group Quebrachito, Subir al Sur and the people of the village are preparing and organizing to celebrate the birthday of their dear village through different activities, which are as follows:
• Construction of a bus stop on the road 32 which gives access to the village of Villa Ana, its decoration will be related to the Centenary of the Village.
• Cleaning, painting and other activities in the local museum.
• Reforestation with different species of trees characteristic of the zone in the area of the ex factory.
• Participation in different activities to be realized in the village organized by the Commission for the Centenary.
• Dynamic activities with children in one of the most marginalized neighbourhoods
During the project the volunteers will also participate in different workshops and talks based around the theme of “Exploitation in Latin America and the Forestal Company in Villa Ana”. A recommended reading list will be sent out with the info sheet
Location: Villa Ana, a village of 3000 inhabitants in the North of the Province of Santa Fe, Argentina.
Accomodation: Shared in Basic conditions.

Proyecto:
El grupo juvenil “Quebrachito” pretende llevar adelante distintas actividades que conmemoren este importante año que estamos transitando. Argentina camina rumbo al bicentenario; el 25 de mayo cumple 200 años como nación, y Villa Ana va rumbo al Centenario; el 9 de julio cumple 100 años como pueblo. Por esta razón en trabajo conjunto con la ONG Subir al Sur y la comunidad de Villa Ana planificamos llevar adelante desde el 28 de junio hasta el 11 de julio un proyecto que tiene como objetivo trabajar a través de actividades relacionadas y enmarcadas dentro de los festejos camino al cumpleaños del pueblo.
La historia y el surgimiento de un pequeño pueblo como el de Villa Ana se remonta exactamente a unos 100 años atrás y estuvo en manos de una Compañía Británica que exploto en el nordeste argentino un árbol llamado “Quebracho“ del cual extraían una ansiada sustancia llamada tanino.
La comunidad de Villa Ana se caracteriza por esta historia y por este doloroso recuerdo de usurpación y robo, por lo que el grupo Quebrachito junto con Subir al Sur y la gente del pueblo se preparan y organizan para festejar el cumpleaños de su querido pueblo mediante distintas actividades que son las siguientes:
• Construcción de una garita sobre la ruta 32 que da acceso al pueblo de Villa Ana, cuya decoración estará relacionada al Centenario del pueblo.
• Trabajos de limpieza, pintura y otras actividades en el museo local.
• Actividades de forestación con diferentes especies de árboles característicos de la zona en el predio de la ex fabrica forestal.
• Participación en diferentes actividades a realizarse en el pueblo organizadas por la Comisión de festejo rumbo al Centenario.
• Actividades dinámicas con niños de uno de los barrios más carenciados del pueblo.
Durante el transcurso del proyecto los voluntarios también participarán de distintos talleres y charlas basándose una de ellas en la temática “Explotación en Latinoamérica y la Empresa Forestal en Villa Ana”. Con el hoja guía mandamos una listada de libros recomendados.

Situación: Villa Ana, un pueblo de 3000 habitantes al norte de la provincia de Santa Fe, Argentina.

Llego Moses nuestro primer voluntario EVS de Inglaterra, a través de la organización Concordia UK con financiamiento del programa de juventud de la Unión Europea. Pasamos 5 días en Buenos Aires en donde Moses tuvo tiempo para conocer la cuidad, tomar clases de Castellano y hacer su taller de bienvenida. Moses ya llego a la localidad de Villa Ana, en el norte de la provincia de Santa Fe en donde va pasar 8 meses trabajando en conjuntos con el Grupo Juvenil Quebrachito, desarrollando diversos proyectos comunitarios y enseñando el idioma ingles.

Moses our first EVS volunteer from the UK has arrived in Argentina. The Project is run together with Concordia UK and is financed by the Youth Program of the European Union. We spent 5 days in Buenos Aires where Moses had time to get to know the city, take Spanish classes and partake in his on arrival training. Moses has now arrived in the locality of Villa Ana, in the north of the province of Santa Fe where he will spend 8 months working together with the youth Group Quebrachito, developing diverse community projects and teaching English.

El fin de semana pasado hicimos nuestra capacitación de facilitadores anual en Buenos Aires. Este año estamos muy contentos de sumar al equipo Viviana Villalba directora ejecutiva de Eco Clubes Clorinda quien va facilitar el encuentro intercultural de Villa Ana, en el norte de Santa Fe, en conjunto con otra nueva miembro Lucy Martin quien estudia todo que tiene que ver con Permacultura en el sur de la Argentina. Pasamos unos días trabajando intensivamente lo que es ser facilitadora intercultural con Subir al Sur.

Last weekend we ran our annual training for workcamp facilitators in Buenos Aires. This year we are very happy to add to the team Viviana Villalba executive director of Eco Clubes Clorinda who will facilitate together with another new member of the team Lucy Martin who is currently studying all things to do with Permaculture in the south of the country. It has been almost a month now since I have come back from my journey to India and here I am in front of the screen, with the aim of creating a bridge between my words, my experience and the readers of this blog.
Narration implies reduction. An evaluation of the events is needed to summarize them into an image. I wittingly decided not to tell you in detail about my experience at work camp. We all know that, as a member of the Education team at Subir al Sur, I support and encourage these types of experiences, which I consider to be a fundamental tool for the development of values and intercultural communication.
Now, my wish here is to go beyond the intercultural encounter in order to fully cover my experience in India.
I remember that before initiating the journey, feeling excited for being just a few months or days from realizing a dream that was born a long time ago, I received two types of comments; from people that did not understand my wish to enter such an impoverished, dangerous and underdeveloped country, and from people that just wondered at my interest, and covered everything with a supportive and spiritual aura. And here we have already two images, both idealized and charged with prejudice, from which the writer is not exempt.
The experience of living in this wonderful country at the heart of eastern culture represents, for western people like me, the bridge that is necessary to accept the light and the shadow of human events and culture. First learning, first wall of stereotypes that breaks down. The spiritual and the material spheres, as two existing extremes, are entwined in every culture in different shades, but each culture has them. Therefore, India is not a panacea of transcendence, far from it. It is a country like any other, where human aspects are expressed in a particular shade.
Still, it cannot be denied that I have submerged into a world and a worldview, absolutely different from what I know and from what is usual to me. And these differences, in every sphere, from the bright colors of the saris to the pungent smells of the cities overwhelmed by chaos and poverty, increasingly opened my mind. The boundaries provided by our culture, within which our identities develop and grow, are not good or bad, just contingent. I have seen it with my eyes, without reading it from an anthropology book; our rules, traditions, ways of living our sacred behaviors and experiencing marital love are totally covered by our cultural veils, and we grow along according to their layers. This brought about an immediate expansion in me. The mind opens horizontally to let questions in, not those without unequivocal answers, but questions that feed thought and reflection.
I found a difference of those that make our souls expand. How? Living inside a millennial culture, rings of generations that are entwined by the limits of the unimaginable. To find in the warmest and sweetest looks in the world, the joy of wisdom that apparently grows from the ancestral bones that keep roaring the essential Truths of their songs in spite of the history of looting and domination. Finding myself witnessing a religious ceremony, where the sacred was expressed in numerous signs that did not require a rational explanation to receive veneration and devotion from its participants. Sharing the table with families created out of fixed marriages whose happiness amazed me. Not understanding and getting nervous whenever a situation of gender inequality occurred from my point of view.
My journey to India made me happy because of the certainty of finding different things. The variety of manifestations that Mankind has found to channel its passions and essence is a picture of indescribable beauty. And I feel even happier when I realize that I have a lot more to learn and live, that the creativity of the earth is never-ending.
I have also found sadness when completing that picture. The kind of sadness that comes when we realize that we lived in an unfair world, with opulence contrasting with millions of impoverished. Sometimes it feels even the capacity of imagining a change has been taken away from those lives, which live only to find resignation and hope destruction.
Then is when I see my writing is a call. To what? To open ourselves to different things and keep working so that people that do not have enough resources to make these journeys have a chance. However, it is worth mentioning that in order to find the different culture existing inside of our society we do not need to go that far.
Finally, another thought. A very special metamorphosis develops in our conscious every time we travel, we find ourselves in a rather peculiar tune. Every corner becomes an exploration and every stranger a potential friend. This tune fills our journeys with stories full of magical moments, fascinating people and inspiring places. Enthusiasm takes control of our lives and we feel the kind of certainty that lets us know about our deepest wishes and reflect the possibility of making them come true. Knowing that we can keep thinking that way forever even if we are in-between not so pleasant work routines and obligations, that every stranger is a potential friend and every corner an invitation is another lesson to learn. Knowing that each time we get lost we can invoke those states and let them in ourselves to remind us who we are.

Hace ya casi un mes que volví de mi viaje a la India y aca me encuentro en frente de la pantalla, con la intención de crear un puente entre mis palabras, mi experiencia y los lectores de este blog.
Toda narración implica un recorte, tamizar lo vivido para condensarlo en una imagen. Conscientemente decidí no contarles en detalle acerca de mi experiencia en el workcamp. Ya todos sabemos que como integrante del Equipo de Educación de SAS soy una defensora y propulsora de estas experiencias, las que considero una herramienta fundamental en el desarrollo de valores y de la comunicación intercultural.
Ahora bien, mi deseo aquí es poder ir un poco más arriba del encuentro intercultural en sí y trascenderlo con el objetivo de contarles más ampliamente sobre mi experiencia en la India.
Recuerdo que antes de iniciar mi viaje, en la efervescencia de saberme a pocos meses o días de realizar un sueño gestado ya mucho tiempo atrás, recibía dos tipos de comentarios. Unos, gemían en espanto, sin comprender mi intención de adentrarme en un país “tan pobre, peligroso e involucionado”. Otros, no hacían más que maravillarse frente a mi interés, rodeándolo todo bajo un aura espiritual y solidaria. Ya aquí se deslizan dos imágenes, ambas idealizadas y cargadas de prejuicios, de las cuales no estaba exenta quien escribe.
La vivencia de adentrarse en este maravilloso país en el corazón de la cultura oriental, es para una occidental como yo, el puente necesario para aceptar la luz y la sombra en todo evento y cultura humana. Primer aprendizaje, primera pared de estereotipos que cae. Lo espiritual y lo material, como dos polaridades existentes en el mundo, se entretejen en cada cultura en tonos diferentes pero todas las contienen. Así que la india no es la panacea de la trascendencia, ni mucho menos. Es un país como cualquier otro, en donde lo humano se expresa en una tonalidad particular.
De todas formas es innegable que me sumergí en un mundo y en una cosmovisión absolutamente diferentes a lo conocido y habitual para mi. Y estas diferencias, en todos los ámbitos, desde los colores brillantes de los saris hasta el penetrante olor de las ciudades desbordantes de caos y pobreza, hacían que a cada paso mi mente se fuera abriendo más y más. Los límites que nuestra cultura nos brinda, dentro de los cuales nos desarrollamos y crecemos en identidad, no son ni buenos ni malos, sino simplemente contingentes. Vi con mis ojos, sin leerlo en un libro de antropología, que las normas, tradiciones, formas de vivir lo sagrado y de experimentar el amor conyugal, están totalmente atravesadas por estos velos culturales que van formándonos con sus capas. Esto me produjo una inmediata expansión, la mente se abre en línea horizontal para dejarse penetrar por preguntas que no tienen respuestas inequívocas, sino que alimentan al pensamiento y la reflexión en su valor de interrogantes.
¿En dónde vi una diferencia de esas que hacen que el alma se expanda? En saberme dentro de una cultura milenaria, anillos de generaciones que se entretejen superando los límites de lo imaginable. Encontrar en las miradas más cálidas y dulces del mundo, la alegría de una sabiduría que pareciera brotar de unos huesos ancestrales que siguen bramando las Verdades esenciales de sus cantos a pesar de la historia de saqueos y dominaciones .En encontrarme testigo de una ceremonia religiosa, en donde lo sagrado se expresaba en multiplicidad de símbolos que no requerían de una explicación racional para encontrar la veneración y devoción de sus participantes. En compartir la mesa con familias nacidas de matrimonios arreglados que asaltaban mi asombro ante su felicidad. En no entender y ponerme nerviosa ante lo que yo veía como desigualdades de género.
Mi paso por la India me hizo feliz frente a la certeza de lo diferente. La variedad de manifestaciones que la Humanidad ha encontrado para dar cauce a sus pasiones y esencias arma un cuadro de una belleza indescriptible. Y más feliz me hace saber que tengo mucho más por recorrer, que es inagotable la creatividad de esta tierra.
También me encontré, para completar el cuadro, con la tristeza. Esa que viene de sabernos en un mundo de desigualdades, de opulencias que contrastan con múltiples pobrezas. A veces pareciera que se han robado de esas vidas hasta la capacidad de imaginar un cambio, encontrando a nuestro paso sólo resignación y mutilación de la esperanza.
Entonces, veo que mi escrito es un llamamiento ¿A qué? A abrirnos ante lo distinto y a seguir trabajando para que quienes no cuentan con los recursos necesarios para realizar estos viajes tengan su oportunidad. De todas formas, no está de más advertir que no es necesario irse tan lejos para encontrarse con el otro cultural al que podemos ver en los interiores mismos de nuestra sociedad.
Por último, otra reflexión. Cada vez que viajamos, se produce una metamorfosis muy especial en nuestra conciencia, nos encontramos en una sintonía muy particular. Cada rincón se convierte en una exploración y cada extraño en un potencial amigo. Esta frecuencia, hace que nuestros viajes se llenen con relatos que desbordan en momentos mágicos, personas fascinantes y lugares inspiradores. El entusiasmo se apodera de nuestras vidas y tenemos certezas, esas que nos cuentan sobre nuestros anhelos más internos y reflejan la posibilidad de concretarlos. Advertir que esa conciencia la podemos llevar siempre, que aunque estemos en rutinas laborales y obligaciones no tan placenteras, cada extraño es un potencial amigo y cada rincón una invitación, ése, es otro aprendizaje. Saber que cada vez que nos perdemos podemos invocar esos estados, dejando que entren en nosotros recordándonos quienes somos.

Subir al Sur hizo su reunión anual con Eco Clubes Clorinda el fin de semana pasado. Pasamos unas jornadas muy buenas evaluando nuestra cooperación y programa con los coordinadores, Patricio y Viviana, el grupo de voluntarios locales e internacionales. Conocimos sus nuevos proyectos y también firmamos un nuevo convenio de trabajo en conjuntos. Seguimos este año con la llegada de nuevos voluntarios de Medio y Largo plazo y voluntarios bajo la cuadra Servicio Voluntariado Europea del Programa de Juventud de la Unión Europea.
Queremos agradecer a Eco Clubes por su buena disposición y comentar que estamos muy felices con nuestro trabajo en conjunto y los proyectos MUY interesantes que desarrollan.

Subir al Sur united for its first team and board meeting this year. We worked for several days refining our objectives for this year and focusing on the improvement of our projects. In all, we hope to mobilise 200 young volunteers from Argentina and the world who will join educational projects promoting participation and peace. This year we were very happy that after one year we could meet together with the Subir al Sur founder Cecilia Milesi who had travelled over from London.

Experience from Wales:
I was thinking about half an hour how to start, but I think that the best way to describe it is as an unique experience. I got in surprise how through different idioms, habits, and cultures something in common can be built. This week we finished a footpath for Carmarthenshire’s community, is something gratifying to see people with their dogs crossing from these place and saying thanks for our work.
This workcamp is formed by people from Germany, Argentine, Hungary, Italy, Russia, Malaysia and Korea, which mean a lot of different points of view as well as cultures, it is an enriching experience.
Particularly for me this workcamp come with a personal project that I was waiting for a long time, to make a trip to London, a wonderful and charming city.
These kinds of things make me to think about phrases like “it is impossible”... so in fact are they?.

Experiencia desde Gales:
Creo que estuve como media hora pensando cómo empezar, pero creo que la mejor forma es describir esta experiencia como única. Me sorprende como a través de los diferentes idiomas, costumbres, culturas se puede formar algo en común. En esta semana terminamos un sendero para la comunidad de Carmarthenshire, es gratificante ver pasar a las personas por ahí con sus perros y agradeciendo el trabajo que estábamos realizando.
El workcamp está formado por personas de Alemania, Argentina, Hungría, Italia, Rusia, Malasia y Corea, lo que representa un una gran diversidad de puntos de vista como de culturas, ver la misma realidad desde distintos puntos de vista, es algo realmente bastante enriquecedor.
Particularmente para mí este workcamp vino acompañado de un proyecto personal esperado por mucho tiempo, haber podido realizar un viaje a Londres, una ciudad magnifica y llena de encanto.
Esto me hace pensar en las cosas que algunas veces decimos que son imposibles… realmente lo son?.

In January Subir al Sur and the Youth Group for Solidarity Action Quebrachito, participated in the first Latin American encounter of Theatre of the Oppressed in the city of Jujuy, organized by MTO Jujuy and Relato Sur. The encounter lasted for 10 days, with the participation of 150 people from different parts of Latin America. The first weekend the participants divided into groups and went to different localities in the province of Jujuy offering Workshops in Theatre of the Oppressed and presentations of Forum Theatre. On returning to Jujuy different workshops were given in the city and in prisons. In the afternoon there were Forum Theatre presentations. It was a very enriching experience. En enero Subir al Sur y el Grupo de Acción Comunitaria Quebrachito, participaron en el primer Encuentro Latinoamericano de Teatro del Oprimido en la cuidad de Jujuy, organizado por MTO Jujuy y Relato Sur.
El encuentro fue de 10 días, con la participación de 150 personas de diferentes partes de América Latina. El primer fin de semana se dividieron en grupos y fueron a distintas localidades de la provincia de Jujuy ofreciendo talleres de Teatro del Oprimido y presentaciones de Teatro Foro. Al volver a Jujuy se realizaron talleres de introducción y profundización esta forma de teatro en diferentes partes de la cuidad y en las cárceles. A la tarde hubo presentaciones de Teatro Foro. Subir al Sur significó y significa mucho en la vida de Quebrachito. Junto a ella organizamos nuestra primera actividad, donde pudimos mostrar al pueblo nuestras intenciones de conformar un grupo de jóvenes de carácter comunitario y solidario.
A lo largo de todos estos años hasta el momento que se escriben estás líneas el vínculo ha venido creciendo y fortaleciéndose cada vez más, llevando adelante importantes encuentros interculturales muy significativos para el pueblo, pero también para la consolidación del grupo.
En el medio estos cuatro productivos y sin desperdicios años, seguramente existen incontables experiencias, anécdotas imborrables y que se yo cuantas historias cotidianas que acontecieron en los diferentes encuentros y actividades junto al grupo, junto a jóvenes de otros lugares, junto a la gente del pueblo, etc. Esta parte del trabajo generalmente suele ser la más enriquecedora de todas las experiencias, pero quedan guardadas en cada uno de las personas como una linda sensación de alegría al recordarlo.
Desde ya agradecemos a Subir al Sur por ser parte de está construcción que comenzó a principio del 2006 y que ahora, fines del 2009, alberga 20 jóvenes totalmente afianzados y seguimos proyectando y apostando a la solidaridad y la integración como herramienta creadora y transformadora.

Subir al Sur signified and signifies a lot in the life of Quebrachito. Together with this organisation we developed our first activity, where we showed the village our intentions to create a youth Group with a community and solidarity spirit.
Through these past years until this moment the link has grown and strengthened each time, taking forward important intercultural encounters/workcamps which are very significant for the village, but also in the consolidation of the Group.
During these four productive years and without loosing any years, there exist uncountable experiences, unforgettable anecdotes, and I don’t know how many daily stories which took place in each Project, activities together with the Group, together with young people from different places, together with the people from the village, etc. This part of the work is generally the richest part of all of the experiences lived, and whenever you reflect back on these experiences you are filled with happiness.
We would like to thank Subir al Sur for being part of our development which started in the beginning 2006 and which now at the end of 2009, hosts 20 young people which are totally involved and we continue projecting solidarity and integration as a creation and transformation tool.

Seed balls update!!!/ Noticias sobre los Bolitas de Arcilla!!!

After the rains arrived in Villa Ana just last week the vegetable garden which was made with the volunteers from our August workcamp is in full bloom. The volunteers planted using a system of clay balls promoted by Masanobu Fukouka (One Straw Revolution). Seeds are mixed with clay and water and the clay is made into balls and left to dry before being thrown onto the area where the vegetables are to grow. The system promotes the reforestation of the desert and in Villa Ana the reality has not been so different from the desert in the last years, there has been an important dry spell. With very limited rain fall since August, it has been a crisis situation here for the lack of water. Now the rains have come and the seeds which were preserved in the clay balls have germinated and grown very quickly!!!!

Después de las fuertes lluvias en Villa Ana la semana pasada, la huerta que hicimos con los voluntarios de nuestro encuentro de agosto esta a full!!! Los voluntarios sembraron usando una sistema de bolitas de arcilla promovida por Masanobu Fukouka (One Straw Revolution). Se mezcla semillas con arcilla y agua y se molda la arcilla en bolitas y se lo deja a secar antes de tirar al campo en donde quieren sembrar. El sistema promueve la reforestación del desierto y en Villa Ana en los últimos años la realidad no fue tan diferente del desierto con un sequía importante. Desde agosto tuvo muy poca lluvia y ha sido un situación de crisis por la falta de agua. Ahora que vinieron las lluvias, las semillas preservadas en las bolitas han germinado y han crecido muy rápido!!!!!

We are very happy that Kristine from Solidarites Jeunesses came to pass some days with us in the Subir al Sur office whilst she was travelling in Argentina. She had the chance to get to know about our methods of working and also to meet the local youth group Quebrachito which work in the same village. We hope that through this visit we may develop some new and interesting projects together.

Kristine tuvo la posibilidad de conocer nuestros métodos de trabajo y se encontró con el grupo juvenil Quebrachtito quien trabaja en el mismo pueblo. Peaceworks Sweden - Subir al Sur

Regina Ruete miembro del equipo de Subir al Sur viajará a Estocolmo en Suecia en noviembre gracias a la invitación de Peace Works Sweden para participar en ‘Partnership in Real Life’ que coordina LSU y Forums Syd. La idea es de reunir posibles socios de Peaceworks Sweden que formen parte de la red ICYE, de diferentes partes del mundo y de hablar sobre los posibilidades de cooperación en conjuntos a través de un seminario en donde se tratará de promover la relación entre los socios y de reflexionar sobre esto.

Regina Ruete member of the Subir al Sur team will travel to Stockholm Sweden in November thanks to the invitation from Peace Works Sweden, to participate in ‘Partnership in Real Life’ which LSU and Forums Syd are coordinating. The idea is to unite possible partners of Peaceworks Sweden, member of the network ICYE, from different countries to talk about the possibilities of cooperation together through a seminar which will look to promote the relationship between partners and to reflect on this.

Mid term and Long term volunteering - Cambios en 2010/ Changes for 20-

We feel that the volunteers need more than just an on arrival meeting when they arrive in Bs As, and for this reason in 2010 we will be developing set arrival dates for the volunteers and we will arrange a two day on arrival training program so that the volunteers may be better prepared for their projects and so that they may know who SAS really are. Depending on the arrival dates of the volunteers and the duration of their stay we will ask them to meet again with us for a mid term evaluation. In this way the volunteers can get to know other volunteers in Argentina and learn about our other local projects.
The arrival dates are as follows:

13- 14 March
8- 9 May
31 julio – 1 August
30 – 31 October

Sentimos que los voluntarios necesitan mas que únicamente un reunión de bienvenida a la llegada en Buenos Aires, y por eso en 2010 vamos a recibir los voluntarios sobre 4 fechas fijas durante el año y vamos a organizar un taller a la llegada para una mejor preparación de los voluntarios sobre el porque del voluntariado, posibles conflictos, quien son los socios locales y quien es Subir al Sur. Dependiendo de la duración del voluntariado vamos a pedir que los voluntarios se encuentren nuevamente con nosotros para una evaluación de medio plazo. De esta manera los voluntarios pueden conocer a otros voluntarios en los proyectos locales y aprender sobre los otros proyectos.
Las fechas de llegadas serán los siguientes:

In August 12 international volunteers spend time in the Argentinean province, Santa Fe. The group consisted of men, women, people that spoke Spanish, people that wanted to learn Spanish, people who had never seen South America and people that lived there. During the two weeks in Argentina, the international group learned a lot about each other and the culture of this part of the country.
We worked in two schools, one in KM 41 and the other in Villa Ana. Both have many things in common (the children’s smiles, the work, the food, the feeling within the group etc.) but at the same time, there are many differences. The school in KM 41 is smaller than the school in Villa Ana, both the actual building and the number of students. The two weeks at the schools were productive and unforgettable. We were able to learn a lot about the culture, the people, the region and the typical day of the kids that lived there. I am a middle school teacher, so for me the comparison of the kids there to my own students is very interesting. In the end, each child, despite where they live want the same: happiness, love, food, support etc. This idea does not change worldwide. Nevertheless, my students could learn a lot from the kids in Villa Ana and also recognize the opportunities they have simply because of where they live.
All of the people that planned and worked on this project (especially Vicky, Regi, everyone at Subir as Sur and the Quebrachitos) are fantastic people! Because of the hard work of all the participants, the two weeks in Argentina were beautiful and worthwhile. I left with a feeling of sadness because I had just met these new friends, but with a feeling of hope to do more in my own community. It is because of trips like this that I want to continue to do volunteer work throughout the world. However, Argentina will always have a special place in my heart. I hope to go back soon!

En agosto, 12 voluntarios internacionales pasaron tiempo en la provincia Santa Fe de Argentina. El grupo consistío de hombres, mujeres, personas que hablan español, personas que quieren aprender español, personas que nunca han visto América del Sur y personas que viven allá. Durante las dos semanas en Argentina, el grupo internacional aprendieron mucho sobre ellos mismos y la cultura de esa parte del país.
Trabajamos en dos escuelas, una en Km 41 y la otra en Villa Ana. Las dos tienen muchos cosas en común (las sonrisas de los niños, el trabajo, la comida, el sentimiento dentro del grupo etc) pero al mismo tiempo, hay muchas diferencias. La escuela de km. 41 es más pequeño de la escuela en Villa Ana- el edificio actual y el número de estudiantes. Las dos semenas en las escuelas fueron muy productivos y inolvidables. Podemos aprender mucho sobre la cultura, la gente, el region y un día típica de los niños. Yo soy una maestra de los chicos en “middle school” y para mi, la comparación de los niños allá y mis propios estudiantes es muy interesante. En el fin, cada niño, a pesar de vive, quiere lo mismo: felicidad, amor, comida, apoyo, etc. Esta idea no cambia en todo el mundo. Sin embargo, mis estudiantes podrían aprender mucho sobre los niños en Villa Ana y reconcen las oportunidades que tienen simplemente porque dónde viven.
¡Todos las personas que planearon y trabajaron en este proyecto (especialmente Vicky, Regi, las personas en Subir al Sur y Los Quebrachitos) son personas fantasticas! Porque el trabajo duro de todas los participantes, los dos semanas en Argentina fueron muy lindos y vale la pena. Salí con un sentimiento de tristeza porque acababa a encontrar a mis amigos nuevos, pero con una esperanza para hacer más en mi comunidad. Es porque estes tipos de viajes que me gustarí continuar mi trabajo voluntario en el mundo. Pero, Argentina siempre va a tener un espacio especial en mi Corazon. ¡Espero que volver pronto!

Vino a visitarnos Raffaello de Italia, un voluntario que participó en el primer encuentro intercultural en Villa Ana en 2006. Fue muy lindo reencontrarse con Raffaello y de compartir un poco sobre nuestras experiencias en los últimos años. Raffaello estuvo un día en el encuentro intercultural del mes pasado y hicimos un paseo por el pueblo llegando en el lugar del primer proyecto que fue la construcción de una plaza. Gracias Raffaello por tu visita!

Raffaello, from Italy, an ex volunteer who participated in our first Project in 2006 came to visit us. It was great to reconnect again with Raffaello and to share our experiences in the last few years. Raffaello participated during one day in last month’s workcamp and we went for a walk around the village ending up at the site of the first project which was the construction of a town square. Aída Bisbal Díaz - from Barcelona, Spain

Aída is 22 years old, Works in a primary school in Barcelona with children and adolescents, in a space which is used for free tiem activities undertaking various activities, the aim is that in betwwen the classic subjects of the classroom (mathematics, language, social science etc…) the free time activities may also educate and train to create people and citizens who will be involved in their society and reality. Aida will stay with Eco Clorinda during one month.

Emilie Gauter from the city of Poitiers, France

Sunday 2 August at midday from the city of
Poitiers, Francie, Emilie Gauter arrived to realise a Project during three months within Eco Clubes which Works together with other local institutions. Emilie is an environmental engineer and has worked for the last few years in various foundations who focus their activities on climate change and energy saving.

Dorra Ghrab from París

During the same day Sunday 2 Dorra Ghrab arrived from Paris.
Dorra is 21 years old, is a student in the last year of her masters degree in development for southern counties, specialized in Urbanization and will stay in the town for one month. All of the volunteers arrived in Clorinda thanks to the management of “Subir al Sur”.

El EcoClub Clorinda recibió a principios del mes de Agosto a tres nuevas
voluntarias internacionales que llegaron a la ciudad a través del proyecto
“Subir al Sur”.

El sábado 1º de Agosto llego proveniente de Barcelona, España, Aída
Bisbal Díaz quien es monitora de tiempo libre y de un comedor en dicho
país.

Aída Bisbal Díaz - proviene de Barcelona, España

Aída tiene 22 años, trabaja en una escuela de primaria en Barcelona, con
niños y adolescentes, en un espacio que denominan de tiempo libre
realizando varias actividades, buscando que los mismos aprovechen los
intervalos entre las materias clásicas (matemática, lengua, sociales,
etc.) en actividades que también les brinden educación y formación como
personas y ciudadanos comprometidos con su sociedad y realidad. Aída se
quedara para realizar trabajo voluntario en el EcoClub durante un mes.

Emilie Gauter proviene de la ciudad de Pitiers, Francia

El domingo 2 de Agosto al mediodía llego proveniente de la Ciudad de
Poitiers, Francia, Emilie Gauter que durante tres meses realizara diversas
actividades dentro del EcoClub y en otras instituciones con las cuales se
trabaja en red. Emilie es ingeniera Ambiental y trabaja desde hace varios
años en diversas fundaciones que centran sus actividades en el cambio
climático y en el ahorro de energía.

En horas de la noche del mismo domingo 2 arribo Dorra Ghrab desde Paris.
Dorra tiene 21 años, es estudiante del último año de la Maestría en
Desarrollo para los Países del Sur, con especialización en Urbanismo y
permanecerá en la ciudad durante un mes. Todas las voluntarias llegan a
Clorinda gracias a gestiones de “Subir al Sur”.

The fourth Project of solidarity action in the locality of Villa Ana, province of Santa Fe together with the Youth Group Quebrachito has finished! The project was fantastic and a great success. The volunteers put all of their will into the solidarity actions and this can be seen in the results of their efforts which can be seen in the photos on our Facebook page.
We spent one week in the rural school of the Km 41 where we were hosted by the director Ramón Cuello who really took care of us and we painted the whole school, the games, and we made a mural, in addition to making and throwing seed balls in the vegetable garden of the school.
In the second week we undertook various tasks in the school of the Barrio Sur with the great support of the Director Aníbal Melgarejo we made a vegetable garden, made and threw in seed balls and the INTA (National Institute of Agricultural technology) from the pro vegetable garden program came to give us information about their activities and to learn about the seed ball technique. We planted some Quebracho Colorados, native trees of the region for the future generations of the school; we also painted games and made a mural.
During the whole encounter we worked on the themes of Ecology and Food Sovereignty, we watched a film called “Reverdecer”, visited a family who use biogas and visited an ecological farm in the area called Naturaleza Viva in addition to learning about Fukouka’s technique of offering seeds to nature in the form of seed balls.

Se termino nuestro cuarto proyecto de cooperación solidaria en el localidad de Villa Ana, provincia de Santa Fe con el grupo de acción solidaria Quebrachito! El proyecto fue muy hermoso y un verdadero éxito. Los voluntarios pusieron todas sus ganas en los trabajos solidarios y eso se observa en los resultados obtenidos que pueden ver en las fotos subidas en Facebook:
Pasamos una semana en la escuela rural del Km. 41 en donde fuimos recibidos por el director Ramón Cuello que nos cuido muchísimo y pintamos toda la escuela, los juegos y realizamos un mural, además de sembrar con bolitas de arcilla en la huerta de la escuela.
En la segunda semana hicimos varios trabajos en la escuela del barrio sur con el gran apoyo del director Aníbal Melgarejo en donde construimos una huerta, sembramos con bolitas de arcilla, vino el INTA (Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria) programa Pro Huerta para brindarnos información sobre sus actividades y para aprender sobre la técnica de las bolitas arcillas. Plantamos unos Quebrachos Colorados, árboles nativos de la región, para las futuras generaciones de la institución.. Además pintamos juegos y realizamos un mural.
Durante todo el encuentro trabajamos los temas de Ecología y Soberanía Alimentaría, vimos un documental sobre dicho tema; “Reverdecer”, visitamos una familia que trabajan con biogás y realizamos una salida a una granja agro ecológica de la zona llamada Naturaleza Viva además de aprender sobre la técnica de Fukuoka de ofrecer semillas a la naturaleza con bolitas de arcilla.

We are very happy to update you about our mid term and long term volunteering program! We started this program last year with our partners Eco Clubes Clorinda and the Youth Group for Solidarity Action Quebrachito in Villa Ana, province of Santa Fe. This year we have opened new projects in Bahia Blanca with Piedra Libre and in Jujuy with la Agencia de Desarrollo Local. To date we have received 9 volunteers and are expecting the arrival of 6 more volunteers at the end of this month. We are very happy to be receiving these dedicated volunteers and hope to be able to share with you information about their experiences soon!

Estamos muy felices de ponerlos al tanto sobre nuestro programa de voluntariado de medio y largo plazo! Empezamos este programa el año pasado con nuestros socios de Eco Clubes Clorinda y el Grupo de Acción Comunitario Quebrachito en Villa Ana, provincia de Santa Fe. Este año abrimos nuevos proyectos en Bahia Blanca con Piedra Libre y en Jujuy con el Agencia de Desarrollo Local. Hasta la fecha hemos recibidos 9 voluntarios y estamos esperando la llegada de 6 voluntarios más a fines de este mes. Estamos muy contentos de recibir estos voluntarios tan dedicados y esperamos poder compartir información sobre sus experiencias pronto!

Subir con Conciencia 4!

Del 3 al 16 de agosto recibimos 11 voluntarios internacionales y nacionales en la localidad de Villa Ana provincia de Santa Fe, este es el cuarto año consecutivo trabajando en conjunto con el Grupo Juvenil de Acción Comunitaria Quebrachito. Vamos a estar colaborando en dos escuelas haciendo actividades pedagógicas con los niños, además de pintar, poner juegos y trabajar en la huerta implementando una siembra con el sistema de Fukouka que consiste en elaborar bolitas de arcilla para promover la reforestación en el pueblo que fue victima de la explotación de sus bosques de Quebracho Colorado durante medio siglo por una empresa extranjera. Nuestra temática central este año es sobre ecología y soberanía alimentaria, también vamos a visitar una granja ecológica y aprender sobre la realidad local por medio de charlas informativos.

From the 3rd until the 16th of August we will receive 11 international and national volunteers in the locality of Villa Ana province of Santa Fe, this is the 4th year running working together with the Youth Group for Community Action Quebrachito. We will be working in two schools undertaking pedagogical activities with the children, painting of the buildings, making games, and planting in the vegetable garden using Fukouka´s system of making clay balls in order to promote reforestation in the village which was exploited for it`s Quebracho Colorado forest during half a century by a foreign business. El viernes 6 de marzo tuvimos nuestra primer reunión informativa del año en Casa Natura en Palermo. Le contamos al público sobre los tres programas fundamentales de Subir al Sur: envío de voluntarios al mundo, recepción de voluntarios internacionales a proyectos en la Argentina y encuentros interculturales organizados por socios locales y SAS. Sobre todo focalizamos la charla en el programa Subir al Mundo, que promueve el voluntariado de argentinos en el resto del mundo.
Invitamos a Carlos Azamé, participante activo de Cooperativa Malaver, un socio de Subir al Sur en zona norte del Conurbano Bonaerense, a que brindara testimonio de su experiencia en el encuentro intercultural que se llevó a cabo en el 2008, donde recibieron 10 voluntarios internacionales y acondicionaron el espacio de la Cooperativa, con esfuerzo y mucha dedicación!

On Friday, March 6th, the first Subir al Sur’s meeting of the year at Casa Natura (in Palermo) took place. We explained Subir al Sur’s three basic programmes to the audience: outgoing of argentine volunteers to the world, incoming of international volunteers to local projects in Argentina, and International Workcamps (Encuentros Interculturales) organized by local partners together with SAS. The meeting was mainly focused Subir al Mundo, that is, the sending of argentine volunteers to the rest of the world.
We invited Carlos Azamé, an active participant of Cooperativa Malaver, parters of Subir al Sur in the north of the suburbs of Capital City, to tell us about his experience on the 2008 International Workcamp that took place at the Cooperativa’s Centre, where they received 10 international volunteers and straightened up the Centre with effort and much dedication!

UNOY: Proyecto por la construcción de la democracia y la paz /

The “Role of Youth as Citizens in the Construction of Democracy and Peace” project will train 35 youths, 18 from Europe and 17 from Latin America, in dialogue and active citizenship, in order to fight Discrimination and promote democracy. The project will engage youths in three aspects over the period of 12 months. First, the youths, aged 18-35, will be trained in Cordoba, Argentina. The training session will highlight network and partnership building, peer-to-peer sharing of experiences and learning, dialogue skills, conflict analyses and dealing with Discrimination. Capacity building in project management, and advocacy and campaigning skills will be taught. Then, the participants will disperse to their communities, and share their experiences and new skills with other youth, in decentralised projects. The participants will discuss the training, and their progress in online forums and yahoo groups, and all participants and project partners will implement events to celebrate the 21st September International Day of Peace in 2009. In October, the participants will meet in the Netherlands for an evaluation follow-up training-meeting, which will examine the successes of the original training and the follow-up activities, as well as reinforce partnerships.

El Proyecto “El rol de los jóvenes como ciudadanos en la construcción de la Democracia y la Paz” contará con la participación de 32 jóvenes, 16 de Europa y 16 de Latinoamérica, trabajando desde la construcción del Diálogo y de una Ciudadanía activa, para enfrentar la discriminación y promover la Democracia.
El proyecto involucrará a jóvenes de las dos regiones en tres etapas durante un período de 12 meses. Primero, los participantes asistirán a un seminario de 9 días en Córdoba (del 15 al 22 de Mayo), Argentina, entre el enfocándose en la construcción de redes y oportunidades de cooperación, aprendizaje entre pares de experiencias, herramientas de dialogo, de análisis de conflictos y de discriminación, para promover el establecimiento de una Cultura de la Paz en la sociedad. Los jóvenes serán desafiados a explorar sus propias posibilidades y responsabilidades para trabajar contra la discriminación y promover la participación democrática en la sociedad. También recibirán capacitación en diseño y ejecución de proyectos, de intermediación y ejecución de campañas sociales.
En la segunda etapa del proyecto, los participantes regresarán a sus comunidades, y compartirán sus experiencias y nuevas habilidades con otros jóvenes, realizando proyectos sociales con el apoyo de cada una de las organizaciones y de la Secretaría Internacional de UNOY. Los participantes discutirán y compartirán sus experiencias en esta segunda etapa a través de un online fórum y de la creación de yahoo o googlegroups. También realizarán una celebración simultánea del Día Internacional de la Paz, el 21 de Septiembre.
En la tercera etapa, que se llevará a cabo en noviembre de 2009 (fechas a confirmar), los participantes se reunirán en los Países Bajos para realizar una evaluación y una reunión de seguimiento del proyecto. En ella, se examinarán los logros del seminario y las actividades posteriores, así como se utilizará como un punto de encuentro para reforzar instancias de cooperación entre los participantes. La reunión en Países Bajos incluirá una visita a una organización Holandesa de Jóvenes así como, de ser posible una reunión con representantes de la Unión Europea.

ESPAÑOL: Subir al Sur reinicia sus actividades de 2009 con muchas novedades!

Ceci Milesi está en Londres aprendiendo mucho sobre mediación, y Vicky Lovelocke, a cargo de EVS y Proyectos Especiales de SAS, se mudó a Salta para aprender sobre bio-construcción!

Mientra tanto, el nuevo plantel del equipo de SAS en Buenos Aires está encarando este nuevo año con mucha energía! Sol y Regina trabajan todos los días, con reuniones semanales de planificación y desarrollo de los objetivos 09.

Entre ellos están el envío de voluntarios argentinos al exterior y el recibir voluntarios internacionales para que puedan participar en proyectos de distintas partes de nuestro pais.
Además, ya se definió el workcamp 2009 "Subir con conciencia", organizado por Quebrachito-SAS en Villa Ana, Santa Fe, para agosto; y ya están inscriptas Sol y Regi en el proyecto UNOY: "El rol de los jóvenes ciudadanos en la construcción de la democracia y la paz", del cual les contaremos pronto en una noticia aparte!

Ceci Milesi is learning a lot about mediation in London and Vicky Lovelocke, in charge of EVS and Special Projects for SAS, moved to Salta to learn about bio-construction!

Meanwhile, SAS has a new team in Buenos Aires that is facing this new year with a lot of energy! Sol and Regina work every day and meet every week for the planning and developing of 09's objectives.

Some of these objectives are the sending of argentinian volunteers to other countries of the world and receiving international volunteers to participate on different projects from our country.

Besides, it's been defined 2009 workcamp "Subir con conciencia", in August, organized by Quebrachito-SAS in Villa Ana, Santa Fe; and Sol and Regi have already completed their inscription for UNOY's project: "The Role of Youth as Citizens in the Construction of Democracy and Peace". This project will soon be explained in detail!

El evento “Pensando El Norte” se realizó durante los días 21,22 y 23 de noviembre en la localidad de Villa Ana con la participación de jóvenes provenientes de distintos lugares de la nación. Durante 3 días se realizaron talleres sobre política, historia y ecología, a la noche los jóvenes festejaron con conciertos. El objetivo era fomentar la integración y el intercambio entre los participantes, con particular atención a los aspectos de cooperación y solidaridad.

The event ´´Pensando el Norte´´ took place from the 21-23 November in the locality of Villa Ana with the participation of young people coming from different parts of the nation. Evalución de mitad de tiempo/ Mid-term evaluation

Entre los 23 y 26 de octumbre organizamos la evaluación de mitad del tiempo de los 6 proyectos de „Lazos al Sur”. Los 6 voluntarios europeos llegaron al fin de mayo con el programa Servicio de Voluntariado Europeo,que es parte del programa de juventud de Europa. Desde entonces trabajan en proyectos sociales en diferentes regiónes de Argentina.
El objetivo de la evaluación era compartir las experiencias de las actividades y brindar ideas como mejorar los proyectos de cada uno de los 6 proyectos.
En las siguientes noticias vamos a presentar las actividades de cada uno.

Between the 23d and the 26th of October Subir Al Sur organized the mid-term evaluation of the 6 projects of “Ties to the South”. The six volunteers arrived at the end of May and since then they have been participating in social projects throughout Argentina and will stay until December 2008. This project is funded with the support of the Youth in Action programme of the European Commission.
The objective of the mid term evaluation was to share the experiences of the activities of each other and to support each others with ideas about how to improve each of the projects.

Rodrigo Sanchez de España trabaja en Formosa, en la ciudad de Clorinda junto a la organización Ecoclubes. Participa en la organización de expectáculos de teatro de muñecas, que tienen como objetivo la educación de los niños para enseñarles las medidas de la prevención del dengue. Además prepara varios talleres para niños con discapazidades. Colaborando con la Cruz Roja, organiza actividades recreativas y programas culturales, da training internal sobre el cambio climatico, participa en programas de radio y en el programa de plantación de árboles. Rodrigo Sanchez from Spain is working in Formosa, in Clorinda with the organization Ecoclubes. He participates in puppet shows which are used as a pedagogical tool to share information with the young people related with dengue and prevention measures. He is leading many workshops in schools. Collaboration with the Red Cross, in cultural activities and specifically in recreation programs in the Toba neighbourhood. Jana Scroeder from Germany is working in the city of Buenos Aires, with the organization Proyect Arte. She participated and helped to prepare a project for children from 8- 10 from the neighbourhood who had an art class with the young artists who are studying in the school and international volunteers. She supports in the various administrative tasks of the organization and during the opening events of the galleries. She will also participate in the preparation of the cinema sessions.

Participa en eventos y presentaciónes y concentra en hacer contactos institucionales para difundir informaciónes. Desarolla actividades de difusión online, apoya la organización en sus tareas administrativas. También participaba en el encuentro en Malaver-Villate que fue organizado por Subir Al Sur.

She focuses on the diffusion of ´´Subir al Mundo´´ which is a program to diffuse information about international workcamps all over the World. She takes part in presentations and meetings in Buenos Aires and concentrates on making institutional contacts in order to share this information. She also diffuses information online and supports the organization with the administrative tasks .

Mauro Mondello de Italia trabaja en la provincia de Santa Fe, en el pueblo de Villa Ana con el grupo de jóvenes locales, Los Quebrachitos. Desarolla varias actividades comunitarias, como por ejemplo la conservación del museo local y la plaza central, la colección y redistribución de ropas. Además organiza un festival para noviembre, varios talleres en las escuelas locales y la construcción de una huerta comunitaria. También desarrolló un blog (quebrachito.blogspot.com) y un grupo en Facebook para Los Quebrachitos, organiza foros de cine, da clasés de italiano y de inglés para los miembros de la comunidad, participa activamente en el programa de radio que tiene el grupo local, y esta desarollando una revista mensual con los Quebrachitos.

Mauro Mondello from Italy is working with The Quebrachito Youth Group in the province of Santa Fe, in Villa Ana. He undertakes many activities with the team, such as: maintenance of the local museum and town square, In addition to collecting and redistributing clothes, organizing a festival in November, various works in local schools, and the construction of a community vegetable garden, etc. He has also developed a blog for the Quebrachitos (quebrachito.blogspot.com) and a Facebook group, and gives Italian and English lessons for many members of the community. The youth group have a radio program in which he participates actively, and he is also creating a monthly magazine with the youth group.

Alessio Rizo de Italia trabaja en la ciudad de Pergamino con la organización Ecoclubes Pergamino. Participa en actividades de campañas ecologicas que tienen como objetivo incrementar la conciencia sobre reciclaje. También participa en las actividades de dos voluntarios internacionales que realizaron proyectos de corto plazo con diferentes actividades con la comunidad.

Alessio Rizo from Italy is participating in a project with Ecoclubes Pergamino. His tasks include visiting schools in order to raise ecological awareness among young people in the community. He participates in the open air activities, in schools and also helps out in the local plant nursery. He also supports the team on their work at the local Plants Nursery and Compost Area of Pergamino.

Andreas Hubman de Austria trabaja en la ciudad de el Bolson, en la escuela de El Hoyo. Organiza talleres de guitarra y apoya los talleres artisticos y de fotografía. También participaba en proyectos de cine, en los que se trataba de compartir películas de cortometraje con los alumnos.

Andreas Hubman from Austria is working in the town of el Bolson, in the locality of El Hoyo. He runs a Guitar Workshop for the pupils of the school in El Hoyo and has run artistic and photographic workshops. He has participated in the organization of the Project Cine Intinerante where the objective was to share short films with the students.

Entre el 23 y 26 de octumbre organizamos la evaluación de mitad del tiempo de los 6 proyectos de „Lazos al Sur”. Los 6 voluntarios europeos llegaron al fin de mayo con el programa Servicio de Voluntariado Europeo,que es parte del programa de juventud de Europa. Desde entonces trabajan en proyectos sociales en diferentes regiónes de Argentina.
El objetivo de la evaluación era compartir las experiencias de las actividades y brindar ideas como mejorar los proyectos de cada uno de los 6 proyectos.

Por segunda vez organizamos nuestra reunión informaitva en el barrio de Palermo, en la casa Natura. Después de presentarnos, mostramos algunos videos sobre los primeros proyectos de voluntariado y comentamos nuestras experiencias a los invitados sobre los países donde hicimos voluntariado. Nos quedamos en contacto, Gracias a todos por haber venido!

For the second time we organized our regular informational meeting in Palermo district, in the "Casa Natura". After presenting ourselves, we were sharing our experiences about our voluntary proyects in different countries and showing videos for the visitors. Thank you for everybody for coming!

We invite you to the monthly INFORMATION EVENING on Subir al Sur! The idea is to share with you information about our program ¨Subir al Mundo¨ so that more Argentines can be volunteers in different continents of our World. We hope to bring you testimonies from volunteers who have participated in project in Italy, Palestine and Greece! Uno de los proyectos de Subir Al Sur fue seleccionado para ser parte de una exhibición de fotos en los centros de UNESCO en Paris. La muestra tiene como objetivo concientizar a las personas que todos los días visitan uno de los centros de reunión y trabajo más importantes de las Naciones Unidas.
y mostrar los logros que jóvenes de todo el mundo estamos teniendo al apostar por una educación para el respeto del medio ambiente.
El proyecto fue concentrado en recycling y fue desarrollado por Catherine Davies en el norte de Argentina junto con el Centro de Mujeres Clorindenses.

One of Subir al Sur´s projects has been selected to be part of a photo exhibition in the UNESCO in Paris. The exhibition is designed with the objective to focus on raising awareness in the people who visit each day one of the most important centres of meeting and work of the United Nations, and to show the achievements that young people from all over the World are making in respect to education environmental awareness. The project based on recycling was developed by Catherine Davies, in the North of Argentina with the Centro de Mujeres Clorindenses.

Los voluntarios se integraron a los proyectos locales durante dos semanas.Dos voluntarios franceses trabajaron junto a Eco Clubes - Pergamino, un voluntario de Corea del Sur se sumó al grupo de jóvenes de Villa Ana con los Quebrachitos, un voluntario italiano y un frances realizó acciones comunitarias junto al Ecoclub Clorinda. Subir al Sur fue invitada para participar en la Fiesta de Reciclaje organizada por Eco Clubes y por la fundación Piedra Libre del 3 al 5 de Octubre en Bahía Blanca, Provincia de Buenos Aires. Así, Subir al Sur se suma a un evento por la protección del medio ambiente junto con 400 jóvenes de todas partes de Argentina. Esperamos que este nuevo encuentro entre Subir y los Ecos sume al espiral de proyectos conjuntos!

Subir al Sur have been invited to participate in the FIESTA DE RECICLAJE 3-4-5 October by Eco Clubes and the Foundation Piedra Libre in Bahia Blanca. Subir al Sur will participate in this event to protect the environment along with 400 young people from all over Argentina.
